The S7 Gdańsk – Elbląg expressway, on the Nowy Dwór Gdański – Elbląg section (Kazimierzowo junction), was put into service by Budimex on time on 31 October. The route of just over 19 km is already open to traffic.
The construction of the route started in 2015 and was divided into two sections. The contractor of the second of them, from Kazimierzów to Nowy Dwór Gdański, was Budimex. As part of the contract, the company built m.in. two two-level road junctions: Żuławy East and Elbląg West. The gross value of the contract is over PLN 1.5 billion.
Budimex signed a contract for the construction of the S7 section in October 2017. One of the largest undertakings on the occasion of this investment was the construction of a bridge over the Nogat River. – It is the longest structure on this construction site, 595 m. We made it using the sliding method – says Jakub Długoszek, Budimex Regional Director. In addition to two road junctions and a bridge, Budimex also completed a total of 4 structures, i.e.: bridges and viaducts over the expressway, in order to connect local traffic and 17 animal crossings.
Extremely reinforced road
The section of the S7 road built by Budimex is a phenomenon on a national scale in terms of the solutions used. – Each kilometer of the over 19-kilometer route has been reinforced with technologies, e.g. prefabricated drains, of which we used a total of 6 million running meters. We have also built overloading embankments with 4 millionm3 of soil. They are to simulate the load that will take place when vehicles use this road. Their application generated subsidence, which would have occurred in this area anyway, but thanks to the embankments it was under our control. This makes the road even and safe – explains Jakub Długoszek.
The S7 expressway will be 720 kilometres long in total and will connect the Tri-City with Warsaw and then with the agglomerations of Radom, Kielce and Kraków. Together with the A1 motorway, they will be one of the most important roads leading to the Baltic Sea. – The construction of the S7 is also an important investment in the context of improving driving comfort and safety. The reduction of the number of single-level intersections in favor of two-level intersections will significantly improve traffic flow. We are proud that this is another such important road project in our country, in the implementation of which we are taking part – says Dariusz Blocher, President of Budimex S.A.
