A consortium of Budimex and KZN Rail has signed a contract with Koleje Małopolskie for the construction and equipment of technical facilities for the operation of rolling stock in Kraków. The task will be carried out in the “DESIGN and BUILD” formula. The completion date is scheduled for 18 months from the date of signing the contract.

The area on which Budimex and KZN Rail will operate has been leased from the PKP Group for 30 years. As part of the contract, a railway hall with dimensions of approx. 36m x 141m. This type of facilities can accommodate up to 30 4- and 5-unit vehicles.

The building will be divided into four zones, in which there will be a workshop and repair part,  office and social part, a warehouse and a rolling stock wash. According to the project, the necessary equipment and m.in will be built in the hall. water supply, sanitary, central heating and air conditioning installations. In the immediate vicinity of the car wash, the construction of an industrial wastewater treatment plant with a capacity of about 5 dm3/s is planned.

As part of the project, the railway traffic control network as well as power and telecommunications networks will be modernized. On the side of KZN Rail, the entire track system will be rebuilt, including the installation of 16 turnouts, enabling efficient movement of trains along the entire siding.

The particular importance of the investment for the development of agglomeration railways was emphasized by the Minister of Infrastructure, Andrzej Adamczyk, who was present at the signing of the agreement. No wonder, because modern and functional maintenance facilities, although invisible to the passenger, remain a guarantee of the reliability of the rolling stock and the high quality of the carrier’s services.

The construction of a service centre for a railway carrier is the first investment of this type by Budimex. However, the company has many years of experience in running railway projects. She completed m.in. modernization of LCS Kutno on the Żychlin – Barłogi section with a length of 18 km and is carrying out the reconstruction of the Port of Gdynia station worth PLN 1.8 billion gross. On the other hand, KZN Rail carried out a very similar order for Koleje Dolnośląskie. Both companies have an extensive portfolio of jointly implemented projects, such as the construction of the Łagiewnicka Route currently underway in Kraków or the modernisation of the Nowa Huta Depot, where KZN Rail operates as a subcontractor for track works for Budimex. The companies have their own equipment to perform railway works and specialized staff of engineers, thanks to which they complete the won contracts on time, guaranteeing the highest quality.
