Patients of the modernized University Teaching Hospital, the area of which has doubled, will be able to use the new Dialysis Station Clinic, Clinical Research Center and Nephrology Department. The expansion was a big challenge. The facility was open during the works, which required m.in. relocation of individual wards with staff and ensuring constant availability of utilities.
The opening of the expanded facility took place on October 10. The total value of the project is over PLN 282 million. The investment was commissioned by the Medical University of Bialystok. Budimex began two-stage works in July 2011 and completed them in September 2018. Thanks to the modernization, the hospital has expanded by 100,000m3 of new cubature. The usable area of the buildings is 38.1 thousand m.kw, the usable area of the superstructure in buildings D and E – 2.7 thousand m.kw. The works also included the reconstruction of buildings A, B, C, the construction of pavilions G and H, the extension of pavilion F, the construction of internal installations in the buildings, the construction of a three-storey car park (for 210 passenger cars) and the demolition of the helipad.
The modernization went very smoothly. After just a few months, 70 per cent of the Poles were ready. of the shell state of the rehabilitation building and excavations for buildings G and H. Building “M” was also secured against the inflow of groundwater.
In the hospital twice as large, the Dialysis Station Clinic, the Clinical Research Center and a new Nephrology Department were established. Patients will be treated in more comfortable conditions. Each room gained its own bathroom, and thanks to the expansion, the facility was able to multiply the previously too small number of beds and improve the communication route in the facilities.
The construction was an organizational challenge
It was an extremely important, but also demanding investment. Before the expansion, the hospital was already heavily exploited, and its nearly 50-year-old building hardly fulfilled the dual role of a university and a health care facility. The lack of a sufficient number of intensive care beds and the lack of teaching rooms for up to 1000 medical students who stayed on the premises of the facility every day were acute. In addition to the planned scale of activities, the construction entrusted to Budimex was also a purely organisational challenge – during the implementation of the project, all the work had to be carried out while the hospital was operating at the same time.
– We allocated individual clinics together with their staff on an ongoing basis. We had to ensure one hundred percent availability of all utilities, i.e. electricity and water. The well-being and peace of mind of patients were at stake. This required special care in carrying out construction activities – says Dariusz Blocher, President of the Management Board of Budimex S.A. – I am very happy that we managed to carry out everything efficiently, ensuring that the facility can function continuously. This is yet another investment in the medical industry in which we are responsible for a wide range of works. We have modernized the Praski Hospital in Warsaw, the Provincial Hospital in Toruń, and the Regional Health Center in Lublin. These are extremely important projects from the social point of view, which is why I feel all the more satisfied that we have once again participated in improving the conditions of patient treatment.
