The largest Polish general contractor completed the construction of the modern Sports Centre of the University of Gdańsk three months ahead of schedule. The facility with a total area of over 5.8 thousand m² includes a multifunctional sports hall, training facilities, fitness and wellness zone. The investment, implemented in the “design and build” formula, will provide students and employees of the university with a modern space for physical activity and the organization of sports events.

Budimex has commissioned a new Sports Centre of the University of Gdańsk on the campus of the university in Gdańsk-Oliwa. The company was responsible for both the preparation of design documentation and the comprehensive implementation of construction works. Despite the demanding scope of work and the need to coordinate many industries, the investment was completed three months ahead of the original schedule.

The facility, with a total area of almost 6 thousand m², has been designed with various forms of sports activity in mind. Its central element is a multifunctional sports hall, supplemented with training spaces, a fitness zone, wellness facilities and the necessary technical and social rooms. The new infrastructure will allow for physical education classes, trainings and sports events, expanding the university’s capabilities in the field of academic sports development.

“One of the biggest challenges during construction was the assembly of large-size prefabricated elements up to 35 meters long. Their transport through Gdańsk required detailed logistics planning, and we had to carry out some deliveries at night. The use of prefabrication allowed us to speed up construction work, but it required precise coordination of deliveries, crane operation and assembly. Thanks to the efficient organization of the entire team, we completed the investment three months ahead of schedule,” says Paweł Majkowski, Regional Director at Budimex SA.

During the construction, about 300 tons of reinforcing steel and 3 thousand m³ of concrete were used. The scope of works included the execution of the building structure, comprehensive sanitary, electrical and teletechnical installations, finishing works, installation of sports equipment and development of the area around the facility. During the implementation, design and technological changes were also introduced, including the replacement of some monolithic solutions with prefabricated elements.

“At the last stage of implementation, many teams responsible for different scopes of work worked on the construction site at the same time. The biggest challenge was to ensure proper work organization so that individual industries could carry out their tasks without mutual downtime. Thanks to the good cooperation of the entire team, we were able to efficiently carry out the final works and prepare the facility for acceptance,” says Bartosz Ciechanowski, Contract Manager at Budimex SA.

The completion of the construction of the Sports Centre of the University of Gdańsk is another cubature investment carried out by Budimex for the needs of public infrastructure. The company has been participating in the development of Polish higher education for years, developing modern educational, scientific and sports facilities. The new centre in Gdańsk complements the infrastructure of the UG campus and will create conditions for the development of physical activity and integration of the academic community.
