The contract with Gdańskie Inwestycje Komunalne representing the Municipality of Gdańsk, worth PLN 109.7 million net, was signed on 4 August 2011.

The investment is of great importance for the Tri-City agglomeration. The Słowacki Route connects the south-western part of the city with the southern bypass of Gdańsk, as well as connects the Airport with the Port of Gdańsk and the PGE Arena stadium. The new route will also relieve the city’s main thoroughfares.

The contract was unusual. The contracting authority – the Municipality of the City of Gdańsk represented by Gdańskie Inwestycje Komunalne – provided for 25 months for its implementation, Budimex undertook to perform this task in just 16 months. The construction coincided with the European Football Championships, and the route runs near the PGE Arena. The championship did not remain without impact on the progress of work on the contract. Already on 20 May, six months before the contractual deadline, Budimex obtained a permit to use the pedestrian crossing under the Słowacki Route. Thanks to this, during the Euro, fans could go through the tunnel to the stadium.

Also six months before the contractual deadline, the company ensured passability through the interchange in the area of the intersection of the route with ul. Stadionowa.

It is also worth mentioning the unusual viaduct over the railway tracks. The viaduct is four-span, with a box structure made of prestressed concrete, with the longest span of 120 meters over the railway tracks suspended from a steel arch structure. The steel arch structure consists of two pipes with a diameter of 1.5 m and 27 steel joints with a cross-section of 0.8 m. The pipes were manufactured for Budimex in Germany. From Germany, they were transported as 12-metre straight sections to a bending plant in the UK. It took 10 months to produce the structure, including bending and preparing the elements for assembly. The installation took two months.

As part of the contract, Budimex built:

– 2.16 km section of the Słowacki Route (two roadways with two lanes in each direction) and three
single-level intersections: with Al. Gene. J. Hallera (four-outlet with traffic lights), from ul.
Gdańska (three-outlet with traffic lights), from ul. Nowa Gdańska (four-outlet with signaling
light),
– reconstruction of ul. Uczniowska
– harp-type road junction connecting the Słowacki Route with Stadionowa Street,
– a double-track tram line along Al. Gene. J. Haller (370 m long),
– tram turnouts at the intersection with the Słowacki Route,
– a single-track tram line from the intersection of Al. Gene. J. Hallera from ul. Gdańska, (length 415 m),
– retaining walls with a height of 2 to 10 m above ground level, at the junction of the Słowacki Route with ul.
Stadionowa and Uczniowska with a total area of 6.7 thousand. m.kw.,
– a pedestrian tunnel with a pedestrian and bicycle route connecting ul. Uczniowska Street with the PGE Arena stadium,
– viaduct over railway tracks,
– three retention reservoirs were built as part of the hydrotechnical industry and the Canal was rebuilt
Vegetables.
