Budimex has completed the modernisation of one of the most important communication facilities in the Podkarpackie Voivodeship – the Rzeszów G\u0142ówny Railway Station. The general contractor has completed the investment in the “design and build” formula as part of the Rzeszów Communication Center.
The modernization of the station began in 2022 and included comprehensive construction, installation and conservation works. The building has regained its modernist character from the 60s of the twentieth century, in accordance with the guidelines of the conservator. The works included, among m.in, replacement of ceilings, roof, woodwork, soffit of foundations and replacement of internal installations. The interior has also been renovated – passengers will be able to use a spacious waiting room, electronic information boards and new benches. On level -1, a new hall was built to connect the tunnel under the platforms
with the station building and underground parking.
During the renovation, the mosaic in the main hall was conserved, and renovation works were carried out in the cellars. During the works, it turned out that the condition of the structure of the facility differed from the design assumptions, which required changes to the documentation and extension of the scope of work.
Budimex was responsible not only for the modernisation of the station building, but also for the construction of the underground car park and the reconstruction of the square in front of it. The new car park offers 176 parking spaces, and the bus shelters have been equipped with a photovoltaic installation with a total capacity of 60 kW.
– The implementation of this task was an exceptional technical and organizational challenge, due to the location in the very center of the city and the need to carry out work on the historic building. It was extremely important that during the implementation of the works
in 2022, it was found that the assumptions of the PFU (Functional and Utility Program) differed from what we found at the construction site. This resulted in the need to change the documentation, which had a direct impact on the extension of the deadline for the entire investment. We are glad that today we can hand over to residents and travellers a facility that meets modern service standards and at the same time retains its historical character ,” says Miros\u0142aw Polakowski, Contract Director at Budimex SA.
The Rzeszów station was built in the mid-nineteenth century and has undergone many reconstructions. After the war damage, it was rebuilt in the 50s and 60s of the twentieth century, and the current modernization has restored its consistent modernist appearance. Thanks to the investment, Rzeszów has gained a modern and functional transport hub, integrating rail, bus and city transport.
The commissioning of the Main Railway Station in Rzeszów is another example of Budimex’s involvement in the implementation of strategic transport investments in Poland. In 2019, the general contractor completed the construction of the Communication Centre in Kielce – a modern and functional transport hub serving urban, long-distance and international transport. This investment has been nominated for the most important European architectural award, the Mies van der Rohe Award. Budimex’s portfolio also includes works on the modernisation of railway stations, including m.in in Bia\u0142ystok and Wroc\u0142aw. At the beginning of 2024. Budimex has commissioned a modern transport hub in Lublin – this station is the largest, integrated transport centre both in Lublin itself and in the region.
