The largest general contractor in Poland has completed the reconstruction and expansion of the swimming pool and sports and entertainment hall of the Szczecin Sports Centre. The construction was completed according to the schedule, and the facility has already completed the required technical inspections. The value of the investment amounted to PLN 109.45 million gross. This is one of the largest sports projects in recent years in Szczecin, important for both local clubs, players and residents using the city’s sports infrastructure.
Work on the reconstruction of the complex at Wąska Street in Szczecin began in 2023. Over the last three years, a modern sports complex has been built on the site of the existing facility, developed by Budimex S.A. in the “design and build” formula. After completing the last formalities, the facility will be completely handed over to the Municipal Center for Sport, Recreation and Rehabilitation, which will prepare it for opening to residents.
The Szczecin Sports House has been a place strongly associated with sports and the history of the city since 1969. Although the existing building has been almost completely demolished, the most important elements of its original character have been preserved in the new complex. The mosaic above the entrance was reconstructed, the pool basin retained its shape from the 1960s, and the cubic capacity of the building remained consistent with the original architectural assumption. A plaque commemorating the title of “Mister of the 25th Anniversary”, which the facility received in 1970, has also returned to the hall. The characteristic chimney, one of the recognizable elements of the building, has also been renovated.
– The Szczecin Sports Centre is a place of great importance for the inhabitants of Szczecin. From the beginning, we wanted to combine modern technical solutions with respect for the history of the facility. As a company implementing key investments in Poland, we are proud to be able to implement projects that improve the quality of life of residents and support the development of local athletes – says Ryszard Witkowski, Contract Manager at Budimex S.A.
A modern sports complex for the residents of Szczecin
As part of the investment, Budimex carried out the reconstruction and expansion of the swimming pool part and the sports and entertainment hall, as well as technical facilities, installations, spaces for spectators and development of the area around the facility. The new complex includes, m.in, a sports hall with stands, a swimming pool area with a 30-meter swimming pool and eight lanes, a boxing room, spaces for competitors, spectators and technical staff. The facility has also been equipped with modern screens and scoreboards.
– The reconstruction of the Szczecin Sports Centre was one of those projects where the word “challenge” takes on a special meaning. It was possible to implement it thanks to a carefully prepared financial assembly – a large part of this was due to funds from the Strategic Investment Program, which allowed to close the budget of this undertaking. I would like to thank everyone who brought this investment to the finale: the designers, the contractor, the colleagues from the office who supported us in the process of obtaining funding, the team of Szczecin City Investments, who supervised every stage of the work. It is a facility that will serve residents for many years – the next generations of athletes, fans and amateurs of recreation. – he says Michał Przepiera, Deputy Mayor of the City of Szczecin.
Budimex has used modern pool water treatment technology, which allows to recover up to 75% of flushing water, and the heat recovery installation uses energy from water discharged from the pool system. The building is also equipped with photovoltaic panels with a total capacity of 385 kWp and solutions to reduce heat loss. As a result, the new complex has been designed with functionality and comfort of users in mind, as well as lower maintenance costs and reduced resource consumption. New pavements, parking lots and greenery plantings were made around the facility, including a total of 22 trees, shrubs and ornamental plants.
The completion of works on the Szczecin Sports Centre is another important investment of Budimex in Szczecin. In recent years, the company has also completed the expansion of the Polish Theatre, one of the most important cultural facilities in the city.
As part of this investment, a modern complex with five stages was created, which combined the historical part of the theatre with new buildings and significantly increased the possibilities of organising artistic events. As in the case of the sports hall, the project required a combination of modern technical solutions with respect for local heritage. Budimex, as the largest general contractor in the country, consistently implements investments important for Polish cities, supporting the development of infrastructure that serves residents on a daily basis.
