  • The contract value amounted to PLN 77.6 million net.
  • The works began in July 2018.
  • To make the new structure, the recovered original ceiling beams of the Flour and Grain Granary were used.
  • About 5,000 frogs were resettled from the construction site.

In April 2021, Budimex completed work on the Rother’s Mills complex. The subject of the contract with the City of Bydgoszcz was the performance of construction works consisting in the reconstruction, extension and change of use of Rother’s Mill, Grain Granary, Flour Granary and Łazienki Park for the needs of a multifunctional service facility. The usable area of the investment amounted to 12,844.84 m2.

The contract with the investor – the City of Bydgoszcz – was signed in June 2018. The works included: demolition works, liquidation of some wooden swords related to adaptation works, demolition of floors in the basement of the Flour Granary, lowering the floor level, construction of new floor layers in the basements, execution of new water insulation of the ground floor, comprehensive execution of fire protection of the existing and new wooden structure and cast iron columns, execution of new floor layers on wooden and reinforced concrete ceilings, construction of the structure a steel mezzanine, a glass skylight with a glass elevator in the Rother’s Mill building, construction of an observation deck at the roof level of the Rother’s Mill building.

As part of the construction works, flood protection was also made. As part of environmental protection during the construction site, Budimex carried out 5,000 frogs from the construction site.

The complex will include museum rooms, restaurants, a café, an observation deck, a public space and an outdoor terrace with a fountain basin.

– Thanks to the cooperation of the BIM Technical Office team, we made a scan of the building and a digital model of the structure. On the basis of the model, a design of the steel structure of the platforms, the elevator shaft and the design of the glass roof skylight in Rother’s Mill was created, enabling the dimensions of individual elements to be adapted to the crane’s lifting capacity and avoiding collisions with the existing foundations – says Artur Popko, Vice President of the Management Board of Budimex SA, Chief Operating Officer.

The history of the complex of buildings dates back to 1845. Its author was Fryderyk Wulff, the manager of the Bydgoszcz Milling Works, a master of mill construction. The location of the facility on the Mill Island, between the Brda and Młynówka rivers, allowed us to take full advantage of the possibility of transporting grain by water. In the 90s of the twentieth century. Rother’s mills ceased operations and were put up for sale. In 2013, the authorities of Bydgoszcz finally acquired the ownership rights.

On the May holiday, the Rother’s Mill Terrace was made available to walkers. This is the first stage of opening the complex.

“It is a beautiful investment, and when renovated, it will certainly become a showcase of the city and a place that both residents and visitors will be happy to visit,” adds Vice-President Artur Popko.
