On 07.11.2022, a symbolic groundbreaking ceremony was carried out and works began on the nine-kilometre Oświęcim bypass built by Budimex. The construction will include the construction of a national road of the 44th class GP constituting the Oświęcim bypass connecting with the S1 expressway Mysłowice – Bielsko-Biała in the area of the Oświęcim junction.

The Project and Build Contract was concluded with the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways, Kraków Branch, on 10.07.2020, and the application for the issuance of the ZRID was submitted in accordance with the Contract on 10.05.2021.

The construction will be carried out in the immediate vicinity of Natura 2000 areas and over the water intake for the municipality and city of Oświęcim “Zasole” The bypass is also located in the immediate vicinity of the former German Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau. Therefore, the project had to take into account the provisions and requirements of the UNESCO Heritage Impact Assessment Report.

Due to the requirements of the Unesco Report regarding the protection of the Auschwitz/Birkenau memorial site, acoustic protection such as earth embankments and earth and panel screens were designed. Lowered road lighting and luminaires with directional light distribution to the road surface were also used to minimize light dispersion off the road. Greenery was designed to visually isolate the Oświęcim bypass from observation points in historically sensitive places.

During the design process, thanks to the efforts of the Contract, an additional advanced analysis of visibility from the Auschwitz Museum to the future road  was carried out– says Paweł Zawiła, Budimex Contract Director.

For this purpose, a field model with greenery was recreated using photogrammetry using drones, a visualization of the designed security elements such as screens and earth embankments was added, and a simulation was carried out from the camp zone whether elements of road infrastructure or tall vehicles would be visible with such selected protections. The analysis confirmed the correct selection of the route grade and the effectiveness of the designed protections and was highly evaluated by the international Unesco Commission – adds Paweł Zawiła.

As part of the investment, the following will be carried out:

– 9 km of dual carriageway GP class road with accompanying infrastructure and traffic safety and environmental protection equipment
