The largest general contractor in Poland has begun the expansion of passenger terminal C at Katowice Airport in Pyrzowice at the request of the Upper Silesian Aviation Society SA. In the “design and build” formula, the company will develop complete, multi-discipline design documentation and carry out construction works related to the expansion of the terminal on the west side and the enlargement of the adjacent apron The value of the contract is PLN 34.8 million net, and the completion of the works is scheduled for May 2027.
Terminal C serves passengers arriving both from countries belonging to the Schengen area and from outside it. The investment is to increase the capacity of the facility, improve passenger service and improve the comfort of using the airport’s infrastructure. The project provides for the extension of the terminal to the west by about 79 meters. The new part will have about 3.4 thousand sq. m. of usable area, and after the completion of the investment, the area of the entire terminal will exceed 10.4 thousand sq. m. Its total length will increase to about 235 meters.
The changes will also include the baggage claim hall. The number of baggage carousels will increase from three to five, and one of the new belts will be adapted to handle flights operated by wide-body aircraft, taking more than 300 passengers on board. A new, expanded sanitary facility will also be built in the terminal.
“We are starting the implementation of the investment in the facility, which must maintain full operational continuity throughout the entire period of the works. As Budimex, we have experience in the implementation and modernisation of airport infrastructure in Poland, which allows us to efficiently carry out this type of work in the demanding environment of an active airport. The implementation of the investment will increase the capacity of the terminal, improve the handling of inbound traffic and provide passengers with a more functional and comfortable space,” says Tomasz Bzówka, Contract Group Manager at Budimex SA.
The implementation has been divided into two stages, which will allow to maintain the continuity of the operation of the arrival terminal during the works. In the first stage, a new segment of the building will be created with a new entrance for passengers arriving from outside the Schengen area, a relocated border control zone and a new luggage room. After the commissioning of this part, the reconstruction of the existing premises will begin, including, among other things, the liquidation of the existing border control zone and further expansion of the baggage claim hall and baggage facilities.
Katowice Airport is an important element of the Polish transport system. In 2025, the airport handled a record 7.3 million passengers and achieved the best result in its history in cargo transport. The expansion of Terminal C is another project through which Budimex supports the development of strategic infrastructure in Poland. The company’s latest projects in the aviation sector include a simulator and training centre built in the vicinity of Kraków Airport and a contract for the construction of the foundations of the Port of Poland passenger terminal. These projects confirm Budimex’s consistent commitment to the development of Polish transport infrastructure, both on a national and regional scale.
