The project to build the first Polish nuclear power plant has reached another important stage. The general contractor – Bechtel – takes over the management of the area where the investment is being built from Polskie Elektrowni Jądrowe. At the same time, earthworks are starting on the construction site, which will be carried out by Budimex – one of the largest construction companies in Poland, which is in line with the activity of Bechtel and PEJ in accordance with the philosophy of maximum involvement of domestic entities.
– The construction of the first Polish nuclear power plant – which is entering the next stage of implementation today – is the result of consistent actions taken by the government: from securing financing and creating a stable legal framework, to effective cooperation with technological partners and systematically increasing the participation of Polish companies in the implementation of the project. It is an investment that strengthens Polish’s energy security and sovereignty, increases our independence from external conditions and creates conditions to ensure stable and predictable energy prices for households and entrepreneurs. It is the foundation of a strong and competitive economy and greater security for all Poles. Hundreds of Polish companies are already involved in the construction of the power plant, providing the services, technologies and competencies necessary for the implementation of this investment. Our goal is for as much of the value of this project as possible to remain in the country – strengthening the potential of Polish enterprises, creating high-quality jobs, developing national competences and building lasting advantages of the Polish economy for the coming decades – emphasizes Minister of Energy Miłosz Motyka.

Taking over the comprehensive coordination of direct activities on the future construction site, Bechtel will be responsible for both the execution and supervision of the works carried out at this stage, as well as cooperation with the subcontractors of the investment, as well as safety on the construction site.
– The handover of the area where the first nuclear power plant in Poland is being built, along with the start of earthworks, are next, very concrete steps on the way to the start of construction. After years of preparation, research and obtaining the necessary administrative decisions, we are entering a phase of intensive field work. This is clear proof that the Polish nuclear program is moving from plans to implementation. Already today, over 200 people work on the investment site, and in the coming months this number will grow systematically. Entrusting Bechtel with the coordination of works will allow us to maintain the assumed pace of implementation and effectively prepare the project for the next stages of construction – emphasizes Marek Woszczyk, President of the Management Board of Polskie Elektrownia Jądrowe.
The tasks will be carried out by Bechtel m.in. employees from the company’s newly opened office in Pomerania. As the investment progresses, the importance of the Gdańsk branch will grow to eventually become the main operational and engineering base for Bechtel as part of the AP1000 project implemented in the Pomeranian municipality of Choczewo.

We formally become the hosts of the construction site, taking over this role from Polskie Elektrárne Jądrowe. This means that the investment has passed into the next stage – the phase of subsequent operational activities, carried out both by Bechtel’s engineers and experts, as well as specialist, including local, contractors. Today, we have also reached another milestone – we have started cooperation with an experienced Polish company that will be responsible for the implementation of the earth squares. Budimex is the fifth Polish company with which we have signed an agreement this year ,” says Leszek Hołda, President of Bechtel Polska.
From leveling the terrain to the construction facilities. A key stage of preparations begins
The takeover of the coordination of the construction site coincides with the selection of Budimex as the main contractor for the earthworks, so that the works in the field proceed according to the schedule. In the first place, they will include the levelling of the area, the reconstruction and expansion of drainage systems, and the construction of a network of temporary roads with a total length of about 16 km. At the same time, works will be carried out to prepare the areas for future technical, logistic and production facilities and to adapt the existing infrastructure. There will also be an extensive construction facility, including a fuel storage and refuelling site, car washes, equipment maintenance workshops, storage yards and material warehouses, as well as office, social and sanitary facilities. Works under the obtained permit are planned between the third quarter of 2026 and the first quarter of 2029.
On the area of over 300 hectares of the future construction site, works related to the movement and leveling of the soil will be carried out. Additional embankments will be built to prepare the area for the start of major construction works. About 6 km of drainage ditches will also be built, along with culverts and erosion protection.
