Budimex SA, as a member of the international consortium E.R.B. Rail, officially commences work on the implementation of the Latvian section of Rail Baltica – one of the largest infrastructure investments in Europe, connecting the Baltic States with the European railway network. As part of the start of construction, the companies organized information meetings from 11 to 13 December this year, during which the inhabitants of the region learned more about the process, the course of construction and its impact on the local community. The completion of the works is scheduled for 2032.
The project, implemented within the framework of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T), is of key importance for the economic and ecological integration of the Baltic region with Europe. The value of the contract, which includes the construction of 230 kilometres of modern high-speed rail line in Latvia, is €3.7 billion. The scope of work includes 175 engineering structures and 11 ecological crossings. The project is financed in 85% by the European Connecting Europe Fund (CEF) and in 15% by the Republic of Latvia.
“The commencement of the construction of Rail Baltica is a special moment for Budimex. This is the largest contract in the history of our company and a confirmation of further expansion into foreign markets. Thanks to this investment, we are becoming part of one of the key infrastructure projects in Europe. Rail Baltica is more than just a railway line – it is a bridge connecting countries and economies and a huge step towards sustainable transport in the region,” said Artur Popko, President of the Management Board of Budimex SA.
E.R.B. Rail meets with the local community in Iecava
In connection with the start of the active construction phase of Rail Baltica, information meetings for residents were held from 11 to 13 December 2024 at the Cultural Centre in Iecava, a town located in the southern part of Latvia. Interested parties had the opportunity to learn about the construction process and the impact of the investment on the Bauska region. During the events, experts from Eiropas Dzelzceļa līnijas, the national project implementer, and the ERB Rail consortium answered questions and presented details of the construction work.
Rail Baltica is a unique project not only in terms of scale, but also in terms of its goal – the integration of the Baltic regions with Europe. Once completed, the line will enable high-speed passenger transport at a speed of 249 km/h and freight transport at a speed of 120 km/h on the route connecting Tallinn, Riga, Vilnius and Warsaw.
Budimex SA’s participation in the consortium implementing Rail Baltica is the next stage in the development of the Polish leader on international markets. After successes in Germany, Slovakia and the Czech Republic, the company is strengthening its position as one of the most important infrastructure contractors in Europe.
