On 17 September 2026, the leading Polish general contractor signed an agreement to continue the expansion of the Dr. Jan Biziel University Hospital No. 2 in Bydgoszcz. The company will take over the investment after the previous general contractor leaves the contract and will be responsible for the completion of the new hospital building along with the elevated helipad for Air Ambulance helicopters. As part of the task, a modern operating theatre with 11 rooms, including two hybrid rooms, will also be built.
The investor in the expansion of the Dr. Jan Biziel University Hospital No. 2 in Bydgoszcz is the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, Ludwik Rydygier Collegium Medicum in Bydgoszcz. The implementation of the task will be carried out in the “design and build” formula. Budimex enters into the contract after the investor’s cooperation with the previous general contractor ends and the works are suspended in 2024.
The subject of the signed agreement is the completion of the construction of a new hospital building with an elevated landing pad for LPR helicopters and a set of internal installations. Budimex will develop the necessary design documentation, taking into account the works and solutions carried out so far, and will obtain a replacement building permit. The general contractor’s duties will also include bringing the investment to obtaining an occupancy permit and registering the landing site.
“Taking over an investment that has begun requires a very thorough recognition of the existing condition and appropriate coordination of work. In the case of a medical facility, it is particularly important to ensure technological and functional continuity between the elements that have already been completed and the solutions that we will implement in the next stages. We have experience in the construction of technologically advanced healthcare facilities and we want to use them to efficiently bring this important investment to completion,” says Mariusz Huryski, Branch Director at Budimex SA.
The new, under construction wing of the hospital will have eight above-ground and one underground storey, and its height will be 34.85 m. The total area covered by the investment is 20,790 m², of which 19,426 m² is the newly designed area, and 1,363 m² is the area of reconstruction. The volume of the facility will be approximately 87.2 thousand m³. One of the key elements of the investment will be an operating block comprising 11 operating rooms, including two hybrid rooms. The scope of work also includes the delivery and installation of permanent medical equipment for the operating theatre with specialist housings and the equipment of the central sterilisation room.
The works will also include the reconstruction of part of the existing hospital, including the construction of a communication core, as well as the modernisation and adaptation of the spaces necessary to connect the existing facility with the new wing. Budimex will also rebuild the internal road system. After the completion of the investment, the company will be responsible for a 24-month service of the equipment along with the replacement of consumable parts, as well as the service of built-in equipment as part of the earlier stage of implementation.
Budimex already has experience in cooperation with the Bydgoszcz Collegium Medicum UMK. In the years 2010–2013, the company carried out the construction of an emergency department with a net value of PLN 51.3 million, while in 2013–2015 it was responsible for the construction of a psychiatric hospital with a net value of PLN 57.9 million. The value of the project currently under construction is nearly PLN 211 million gross.
