On 16 September 2015, the consortium of Budimex SA (leader) and Ferrovial Agroman SA (partner) signed a contract with PKP PLK SA for the construction of the Kraków Zabłocie – Kraków Krzemionki railway connection. The contract has a net value of PLN 209.7 million.

The slip road will consist of two tracks with a total length of 2.6 km (track No. 1 – 1.2 km and track No. 2 – 1.4 km). The contract provides for the comprehensive performance of works, i.e. the construction of embankments, subgrade and railway surface.

The scope of construction works includes:

– reconstruction of the track system of railway lines No. 91, No. 94, No. 603 and construction of a new line No. 624 running on railway flyovers between the Kraków Zabłocie – Kraków Krzemionki passenger stops.

– reconstruction of: passenger stops (Kraków Zabłocie, Kraków Krzemionki), roads, track system drainage, overhead contact line, power equipment, railway traffic control equipment, telecommunications cables, water and sewage networks, heating networks and gas networks.

As part of the task, the consortium will construct 2 viaducts, 3 flyovers, 2 platform footbridges and 2 passages over the tracks.

The contract assumes the completion of all works in 24 months.

As a result, Kraków Główny will gain a direct railway connection with Zakopane, Skawina and Oświęcim. The slip road under construction will also enable a direct connection between the Kraków Główny Osobny and Kraków Bonarka stations. The lack of this connection required a stop and a change of the front of the train at the Kraków Płaszów intermediate station.

Investment in numbers:

  • length of the reconstructed railway track – 8.8 km of single track;
  • development of 6 railway turnouts;
  • length of the reconstruction of the overhead contact line – 6.5 km;
  • total amount of reinforcing steel for installation – 3.1 thousand. tone;
  • total amount of structural steel for installation – 6.7 thousand. tone;
  • total amount of concrete for construction – 25.5 thousand. tone.

The railway connection in Kraków is one of Budimex’s many projects in this segment. In September this year, the Pomeranian Metropolitan Railway was put into operation – a railway line connecting the Tri-City with the airport in Gdańsk – Rębiechowo. In October this year, a new railway station in Bydgoszcz will be put into use. The company’s previous projects in railway construction are m.in. modernization of the railway line in the area of LCS Iława, revitalization of historic station buildings in Wrocław and Przemyśl, modernization of the Gdynia Główna Osobowa station, construction of a tram route in Toruń and modernization of the tram line in Krakow.

The company is interested in implementing further investments in this segment.

– We employ professionals, we have experience. We want to develop our business in this segment of construction and we will take part in the next tenders of PKP PLK – said Artur Popko, Director of Infrastructure Construction at Budimex.
