Corporate social responsibility is one of the strategic pillars of Budimex’s operations in Poland. The leader of the construction industry is starting the implementation of a new CSR strategy as early as 2021. In the years 2021 – 2023, the general contractor will be m.in. actively reduce the negative impact on the environment and climate, ensure the highest standards of occupational health and safety on all construction sites, as well as develop social programs and relations with local communities.
Budimex’s strategy for the coming years assumes the implementation of 22 goals divided into six main areas. One of the most important is the issue of safety – Budimex, as a leader in the construction industry, wants to be active m.in. to reduce accidents on construction sites. – The safety of employees and everyone working on our contracts is an absolute priority for us. We are constantly introducing numerous solutions in this area, thanks to which, despite the increasing number of investments carried out by us, the number of accidents on our construction sites is decreasing year by year. – comments Cezary Mączka, Member of the Management Board of Budimex SA, Director of the Human Resources Management Division. In the coming years, the general contractor wants to fully eliminate fatal accidents and reduce it by 5 percent. year-on-year and 10 per cent. year-on-year rate of accidents and severity among the company’s employees and subcontractors.
Another key area of Budimex’s activities is environmental protection. As part of the new CSR strategy, the company plans to increase the share of energy from renewable sources in the total purchased energy to 50% in 2023 (37% in 2020) and to implement and promote low-emission technologies. Importantly, Budimex has significantly reduced CO2 emissions in bituminous mass plants over the last three years. When carrying out its construction sites, the general contractor also wants to minimize water consumption by recovering waste water so that in the following years the percentage of rainfall in the construction catchment area will increase and will amount to 5 percent in 2021, 7 percent in 2022 and 10 percent in 2023, respectively.
As a leader in the construction industry, the company also places a strong emphasis on staff development and counteracting all forms of gender discrimination. – Currently, women account for 27 per cent. all our employees. The percentage of employment in managerial positions also increased. In 2019, women accounted for 8 percent of this group, and in 2020. already 19 per cent. – says Cezary Mączka. The new CSR strategy assumes that these increases will be maintained through m.in. increasing the number of employed women in managerial positions (by 3 p.p. year-on-year) and maintaining or increasing (year-on-year) the percentage of women promoted in the company’s structures. Budimex also plans to participate in an increasing number of pilot projects and projects carried out jointly with start-ups and to continue its research projects.
Corporate social responsibility at Budimex also includes long-term projects supporting m.in. residents of communities adjacent to the company’s construction sites. – Our flagship initiatives, which we will continue in the coming years, include, m.in: Parent Zone, under which we create and renovate spaces for the youngest patients and their parents in children’s hospital wards, Hello ICE, which aims to improve the safety of children on the roads, or Budimex for Nature, focused on pro-ecological activities – says Cezary Mączka, Member of the Management Board of Budimex SA, Director of the Human Resources Management Division. – Last year, we also got involved in a unique campaign #DomZSerca. We have built and equipped a house, which we will soon hand over to Magda’s large family from Wierzbica – he adds. Budimex’s CSR activities to date have also included the fight against the pandemic. The company donated nearly PLN 3 million for this purpose.
