On On August 4, 2021, the opening of national road No. 12 in Chełm took place. The contract, whose general contractor is Budimex, was implemented in the “design and build” mode. This investment is of great importance for the improvement of infrastructure and road safety in the city.
The project concerned the reconstruction of national road No. 12 within the city limits of Chełm with a length of approx. 8.2 km along with the reconstruction and construction of the necessary accompanying infrastructure, including 5.5 km of local/service roads. The beginning and end of the reconstructed section of the road is located at the junctions of the urban section of the road within the administrative borders of the city of Chełm with the sections managed by the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways. The construction works included a comprehensive reconstruction of Podgórze, Rejowiecka, Al. Przyjaźni, Brest and Eastern Ramp. The bridge over the Uherka River and the viaduct over the former railway siding in the line of Al. Friendship. A new viaduct over the railway tracks and bus stops were also built. Acoustic screens were installed, and over 8 km of bicycle paths were built .
The contract with the investor – the Chełm City Hall was signed in June 2017. Construction works began in 2020. Budimex completed this task in July 2021, 4 months ahead of the contract deadline.
“It was a very demanding contract from the beginning. We thank the residents of the city for their patience and perseverance. The road system ran through the middle of the city. The construction strongly reorganized the life of the agglomeration and its neighbors. We did everything to complete the works ahead of schedule and we fulfilled our promises” – said Artur Popko – President of the Management Board of Budimex SA.
The contract value amounted to PLN 101 million net. The project was co-financed from EU funds as part of a competition announced by the Centre for EU Transport Projects. Its main idea was to increase the transport accessibility of urban centres located in the Trans-European Road Network (TEN-T).
