On 23 May, Budimex SA together with the investor, Lodz University of Technology, and the financing party, the Minister of Science and Higher Education, laid the cornerstone for the foundations of the construction of the “Alchemium – the magic of tomorrow’s chemistry”, the new building of the Faculty of Chemistry of Lodz University of Technology.

Budimex is the general contractor of the contract and the author of the detailed designs.  Construction works began in January.

This is the largest investment project in the field of infrastructure development currently implemented by the Ministry. We have excellent scientific and industrial potential in the field of chemistry – said Jarosław Gowin, Minister of Science and Higher Education, during the laying of the cornerstone.

The new facility will be of great importance for the university and science in Łódź. I am glad that the Faculty of Chemistry, whose traditions date back to 1945, i.e. the very beginnings of Lodz University of Technology, will finally have a modern infrastructure responding to the needs of scientists and students. The scale of this investment is impressive. Currently, the first stage is underway – the construction of a conference and teaching center. Our university needs a representative and multifunctional conference center, which is why the entire academic community is cheering for this investment – says Prof.  Sławomir Wiak , Rector of Lodz University of Technology. Work on the construction site is progressing very smoothly ,” adds the Rector of the University of Technology.

The entire investment is a complex of four solid buildings, which has been divided into two stages of implementation. As part of the first stage, Budimex will carry out Detailed Designs of all disciplines and will build the northern part of the building, i.e. segment C and the BC connector. The building has 5 floors above ground and 1 underground.

It will be a modern educational facility in Łódź. The building will be managed by a BMS (Building Management System) system increasing m.in. energy efficiency of the facility.  The main part of the building, which was designed in a reinforced concrete slab and column structure with external reinforced concrete walls from the north and south, will be an Auditorium for 500 people, stretching through the three upper floors with a roof structure made of glued laminated timber, equipped with a state-of-the-art audio-visual system. – says Radosław Górski – Member of the Management Board – Director of General Construction at Budimex SA.

In addition, the first stage will include the Senate Hall for over 100 people, the Dean’s Office of the Faculty of Chemistry and 17 lecture halls.

In the underground part, there will be a garage and technical rooms such as electrical switchboards, transformer stations, a power generator, a heating substation and server rooms. A fragment of the post-industrial building of Szaja Rosenblatt from the 19th century will also be integrated into the building.  The second stage consists mainly of didactic and scientific laboratories, workshops and chemical warehouses. Budimex signed the contract and started construction in January this year, and the planned completion date of the first stage is 30 September 2020. The value of the investment is PLN 46 million net (PLN 57 million gross).
