Budimex, the leader of the Polish construction market, has received an occupancy permit and commissioned the Warszawa Zachodnia station, including the main hall and level -1. This is one of the most important stages of one of the largest railway investments of recent decades in Poland. The construction covered an area of over 70 hectares, stretching for 5 kilometers, where 14 railway lines intersect.

Warszawa Zachodnia, the largest railway junction in the country, has gained a completely new face after a comprehensive modernization. Every day, the station serves up to 60 thousand passengers and almost 1400 trains. The total length of the new track system is over 35 kilometres, equipped with 137 turnouts and hundreds of railway traffic control elements – from 191 semaphores to almost 580 information displays.

A key element of the modernization was the new level -1, i.e. an underground passage with a width of 63 meters. It is a space so large that it could fit a Boeing 737 aircraft. On average, 600 people and 160 equipment units worked on its creation every day, and in the most intense moments, over 700 employees and 250 machines. Nearly 92 thousand cubic meters of concrete and 11.5 thousand tons of reinforcing steel were used for the construction.

Thanks to this, the facility covers about 30% of its electricity demand on its own. Nearly 100 trees and over 4 thousand shrubs were also planted in the vicinity of the station, emphasizing the ecological dimension of the investment.

The construction of the Warszawa Zachodnia station is an example of how a Polish contractor can carry out investments of key importance for the development of the country. This is one of the most important infrastructure investments in recent years – a project that strengthens the backbone of the Polish transport system and increases the safety and comfort of travelling in Poland for years to come. We are a well-established company, rooted in Poland, based on the knowledge and experience of our specialists. With domestic technical facilities, capital and a strong network of trusted partners, we can effectively support the modernization of infrastructure and strengthen the competitiveness of the Polish economy. I would like to especially thank all our employees and teams involved in this project – engineers, executive teams and designers. It was thanks to their competence, determination and daily work that it was possible to carry out such a complex task in extremely difficult conditions. By implementing such projects, we invest in the development of local companies, build the competences of the future and act in a transparent and responsible manner – so that future generations can benefit from modern, safe and accessible infrastructure ,” said Artur Popko, President of the Management Board, Budimex SA.

After modernization, Warszawa Zachodnia is not only a railway station, but a multifunctional, modern communication and service hub. We are proud that Budimex, together with Mostostal Kraków and partners, has implemented a project of such strategic importance for the capital and the whole country. Thanks to it, passengers received a safe, functional and comfortable facility that will meet the standards of the 21st century ,” said Maciej Olek, Member of the Management Board, Chief Operating Officer of Railway, Energy and Industrial Construction, Budimex SA.

After modernization, Warszawa Zachodnia is becoming not only a showcase of modern Warsaw, but also one of the most technically advanced railway stations in the region. The value of the entire investment carried out for PKP PLK amounted to PLN 2.7 billion and was co-financed from EU funds under the “Connecting Europe” (CEF) programme.

The new infrastructure consists of nine modern platforms, fully adapted to the needs of people with reduced mobility. Each of them has been connected to the passenger tunnel by means of elevators and escalators, which makes it easier for passengers with bicycles or strollers to move around. The total area of the platforms is as much as 35 thousand m². In addition to the platforms, a new station building with a spacious main hall and a modern commercial and service passage with shops and restaurants will also be built.

The investment has been designed in the spirit of sustainable development. The station is equipped with a photovoltaic installation with a total area of over 8 thousand m²,
