Budimex has completed the renovation and modernisation of the PKP S.A. railway station in Białystok. On October 1, 2020, the station was opened to travelers.

The scope of work included, on the one hand, the restoration of the original appearance of the historic station from the 19th century, and on the other hand, its strengthening and protection for the next 100 years of safe operation. The station has been equipped with a modern BMS (Building Management System) installation and photovoltaic panels with a capacity of 24 kW. The thermal insulation of the building has been significantly improved. The station has been equipped with new sanitary and monitoring installations. Barriers for people with reduced mobility (PRM) have also been eliminated.

Budimex engaged about 100 subcontractors and suppliers for the construction works, most of them from the Podlasie region. – The biggest challenge was the underground works, some of which were carried out in the white bathtub technology.  Very carefully it was also necessary to demolish the mezzanine with an area of about 300 m2, located in the main hall of the historic station. We could not use heavy equipment due to its size and fear of possible damage to the structures of historic walls. The works were carried out in small stages, by cutting off individual elements along with their fragmentation and removal from the facility. This required great precision and extreme caution – says Piotr Doroszko, Contract Manager at Budimex SA.

– These are 19 out of 200 stations modernized by PKP SA in the near future. The station in Białystok is special. It is a historic station from 1862. It is a monument of an exceptional class, so special care had to be taken in the reconstruction of this building. Cooperation with the provincial conservator of monuments was particularly important here, which brought a visible effect – says Ireneusz Maślany – Member of the Management Board of PKP SA.

The historic building of the former St. Petersburg-Warsaw railway has been inscribed since 1960. to the register of monuments. The facility was built in 1860. and is an example of neo-baroque architecture. The aim of the reconstruction was to create a high-quality passenger service space, covered by clear and visually attractive information, fully adapted to the use of the facility by people with reduced mobility.

Construction works at the PKP S.A. station in Białystok began in November 2018. The area of the main station is 2965  m2, while the cubic capacity is 23,080 m3. The net value of the investment is PLN 36.6 million.

Budimex was the general contractor of m.in. modernization of another famous historic railway station in Wrocław and  Przemyśl. They were successfully rebuilt and modernized by the largest Polish general contractor in the years 2010-2012. Currently, Budimex is among the top three largest general contractors for the modernization of railway infrastructure in the country.

In addition to construction contracts, Budimex has carried out many social initiatives in Białystok. In 2019, the company planted over 200 trees in the city. It also financed the construction of the Puszczyk Forest Primary School in Osowicze. She also built a Parent Zone at the University Children’s Clinical Hospital im. L. Zamenhof.
