The reconstruction and modernisation of national road No. 12 in Chełm carried out by Budimex is already 65% complete. A new surface has already been laid on half of the route.
At the moment, installation works are underway on the noise barriers on the west side of the new artery. The construction of viaducts along Wschodnia Street and Aleja Przyjaźni is also underway – including roundabouts along the latter street. The bridge over the Uherka River has already been rebuilt. At the beginning of February 2021, the reconstruction of two roundabouts will begin: Roman Dmowskiego and ZWiN. Roundabouts will be passable during this time, but with a changed – temporary – traffic organization. Before Christmas, the organization of traffic along Rejowiecka Street will also change. Car traffic will cross the road.
The construction works without the winter break, characteristic of road construction sites. The works are ahead of schedule.
Unfortunately, the challenge for the construction workers, which is largely under traffic, is the damage to the new infrastructure (curbs and pavements) by drivers breaking traffic regulations. The losses on this account have already exceeded PLN 120 thousand. There are also several properties whose fences are in the right-of-way and have not yet been moved. Truck drivers who do not take the detour indicated by road signs also take their toll. The cameras installed by Budimex record trucks breaking the regulations, and their recording is sent to the police.
The implementation of the project includes the reconstruction of National Road No. 12 within the city limits of Chełm on a section of approx. 8.2 km along with the reconstruction and construction of the necessary accompanying infrastructure, including 5.5 km of local/service roads. The works include a comprehensive reconstruction of Podgórze, Rejowiecka, Al. Przyjaźni, Brest and Eastern Ramp. The investment program also includes the reconstruction of the bridge over the Uherka River, the reconstruction of the viaduct over the former railway siding in the line of Al. Przyjaźni, the construction of a new viaduct over the railway tracks and the construction of bus stops, noise barriers and over 8 km of bicycle paths. The end of the works will take place in October 2021.
