The Marki Education and Recreation Centre developed by Budimex won the title of the Sports Facility of the Year 2019 awarded by the Polish Sports Club. The organization consists of 991 organizations: local governments, construction companies, sports and educational organizations. This is the third industry award won for this facility. Previously, MCER won the title of award for the design of the facility at the PLGBC Awards 2012 and the Green Laurel of the Polish Chamber of Commerce.

The Marki Education and Recreation Centre (school and sports centre) is the most advanced public building in Poland built by Budimex. It is also the first public facility with a BREEAM certificate at the “very good” level. Thanks to the use of the most innovative technologies, the investment will, instead of consuming – produce its own electricity fed into the power grid, obtain water from rainwater and optimize energy consumption at individual points of the Center on an ongoing basis. The opening of the first, educational part of the MCER with a modern primary school took place on September 2, 2019. The sports and recreation part will be opened on November 30 this year.

The construction of MCER began in March 2018. and lasted only a year and 7 months. The pace of work was exceptionally fast, especially since the complex was to serve as an educational, sports, recreational and conference facility at the same time. Nearly 15 thousand. m2 of investment area, has been divided into two buildings. Building A has an educational function and a primary school with a library and a food block was built there. Building B, on the other hand, was dedicated to sports and recreation. There is a sports and recreational swimming pool with a separate SPA part, as well as sports rooms and a theater and entertainment hall. The whole facility is complemented by two outdoor sports fields with space for athletics and a traffic town.

“During this construction, from the very beginning of the project, we used innovative solutions. The entire investment was created in the BIM model, i.e. a cross-discipline 3D design of the investment. In addition, we also used a platform for managing documentation and the BIM model, allowing access to projects and the model from mobile devices. The system also allows for electronic circulation of documents between us, as the general contractor, investor, and designers and inspectors – says Dariusz Blocher, President of Budimex SA.

The entire investment is characterized by very low energy consumption. This is one of the requirements set for MCER by the BREEAM certificate. In building B, a cogeneration unit was used to produce electricity. The heat from combustion will be used to heat domestic hot water. A mechanism for heat recovery from shower wastewater was also used. Photovoltaics is also an important element. The installation on the roof, with a capacity of 60kW, will be designed to produce green energy, which will be consumed by the building on an ongoing basis.

“The photovoltaic panels we have installed will reduce energy consumption from the power grid. During the time when the school is not functioning, e.g. during the holidays, the excess energy produced will be returned to the power grid. Later, after the holiday period, we will be able to partially recover it, which will reduce electricity bills – explains Dariusz Blocher.

Other ecological solutions used in MCER include:
• Proprietary ventilation system for school classrooms based on individual recuperation units – air handling units are coupled with air-to-air heat pumps located on the roof, which, depending on the season, heat or cool the air,
• BMS control over pipe tightness,
• heating system of building A based on heat pumps,
• BREEAM certified batteries.
