Patients of the Provincial Hospital for the Nervous and Mentally Ill im. Józef Bednarz in Świecie can already spend time in new spaces. The 36th Parent Zone was created in the VII Children’s Ward. Despite the difficulties caused by the pandemic, the social program “Parent Zone. Budimex for Children” has been running continuously since 2013. Thanks to this project, up to 300 children a year will be able to use the friendly and subdued space.

“Parent Zone. Budimex for Children” is a nationwide social project, run and  fully financed by Budimex SA. The aim of the project is to create special places in children’s wards of Polish hospitals, where facilities and creative solutions will be conducive to the hospitalization process and shorten the recovery time.

The Provincial Hospital for the Nervous and Mentally Ill in Świecie is located in a historic nineteenth-century complex and is the oldest and longest operating facility in Poland. The implementation of the 36. The zone was the largest in terms of area and at the same time the first at which only the areas of the old corridor were adapted. In addition, this project concerned the highest spaces, because the historic vaults reached almost five meters in height.

“This is the 36. The zone, which we donate as part of the social program “Parent Zone. Budimex for Children”. The project in Świecie was unique for us, not only because of its location in a beautiful, nineteenth-century building, but also because of the needs of patients. Due to the profile of the facility, visits from relatives are less frequent, and the creative solutions used during the adaptation of corridor spaces had to be strictly adapted so that they provide a sense of peace. The new Zone we have handed over will be a meeting place for patients who will spend time there after school and therapeutic activities.” – says Aldona Orłowski, Director of the Recruitment, Development and Communication Office at Budimex.

The inspiration for the space arrangement was the sea, which is why the main colors are shades of blue, beige and white, which will have a soothing effect on young patients. The spaces of the old corridor have been adapted, almost 120 square meters in total. The walls are covered with PVC boards and stickers. Blue shutters have been installed on the windows. The doors were renovated, and there were also plates with the names of the offices. A large, built-in wardrobe was created, which will accommodate, among other things: a TV set and school materials. In addition, there are boards for drawings on the walls. The spaces of the corridor have been supplemented with the necessary furniture, i.e. tables, chairs and other seats. Up to 300 beneficiaries per year will be able to benefit from the Parent Zone in Świecie.

In line with the idea of the programme, Budimex volunteers took part in the last stage of the renovation works. On the day of the final, the 36. The zone was officially handed over, and a press meeting was organized in front of the building of Departments X and VII.

The programme is implemented and fully financed by Budimex SA.

Parent Zone. Budimex for children

Creating more comfortable conditions for parents and caregivers of young patients to stay in the hospital, and thus improving the well-being of children and facilitating their faster recovery is the main goal of the original and unique social program “Parent Zone. Budimex for Children”. Since 2013, the programme has been implemented and fully financed by Budimex SA.

As part of the program, special zones for parents are separated in children’s wards of Polish hospitals. Depending on the needs and conditions in individual facilities, it may be arranging an unused room or a fragment of a corridor, equipping the hospital with an appropriate number of folding beds or sanitary facilities, or organizing a place to rest and play with children. The main objectives of the Parent Zone programme are to provide sick children staying in hospital with their parents for as long as possible, to reduce stress caused by isolation and lack of contact with parents, to publicise the problem of limited contact between parents and children in paediatric wards and to reduce the time of children’s stay in hospitals.
