On October 20 (Sunday), the new air traffic control tower of Katowice Pyrzowice Airport, the tallest in Poland and one of the most modern in Europe, began work. The investor was the Polish Air Navigation Services Agency. The construction of the facility was carried out by Budimex SA in the “build” and “turnkey” system. The construction works were completed after only 8 months from the start of the works.

As part of the investment, commissioned by the Polish Air Navigation Services Agency, Budimex SA built an air traffic control tower with an administrative and technical building, a guardhouse and an autonomous technical building. Before the building was put into use, on-site activities were underway to redirect air traffic from the old facility to the new one.

The new tower of Katowice Airport is 45.75 m high and ranks among the most innovative facilities of this type in Europe. The building also has the highest operating level with the controllers’ room, located at a height of 41 meters. The entire facility with an area of over 1.8 thousand. sqm. It houses airport control and approach rooms, technical and office rooms and all social facilities.

“What distinguishes our project is not only the height of the facility, but also the use of state-of-the-art technologies in its construction ,” says Dariusz Blocher, President of Budimex SA. – The façade of the tower is made of aluminum composite panels, thanks to which it absorbs the energy of the electromagnetic field. The structure of the upper floors is also unusual. From 31 meters, cantilevered ceilings based on prestressed beams were used in the building –Adds.

The construction of a new air traffic control tower at the Katowice airport is a consequence of investments carried out by the airport manager in recent years. The facility was needed m.in. due to the fact that the layout of the port’s manoeuvring area and aprons has been changed and the infrastructure has been moved to the east. In the following months, after the completion of the construction works carried out by Budimex SA, the operating systems and procedures were checked several times to ensure the proper functioning of the facility and, consequently, the safety of travellers. Tenders for the purchase and installation of navigation equipment were also held.

Over the last 30 years, Budimex has carried out most of the largest airport investments in Poland at passenger airports in: Warsaw, Gdańsk, Katowice, Kraków, Szymany and Goleniów. At the moment, Budimex is expanding m.in. Runway at the Airport. Fryderyk Chopin in Warsaw.
