On 6 July, a topping out ceremony was held on the eighth floor of the Specialist Clinical Hospital No. 1 in Lublin, which is being developed by Budimex. This is a sign that the construction has reached its highest level. The topping out ceremony was held on the LPR helipad under construction at the top of the hospital under construction. It was hung on a special mount by a 50-meter crane.
“The biggest challenge was the foundation work for this facility, due to its location in the vicinity of the escarpment and the old town of Lublin,” said Jakub Nagraba, Director of General Construction at Budimex, during the ceremony. Protection of the slope from ul. Staszica – the building of the new hospital “segment C” has been designed in such a way that 70% of its volume has been “cut” into the existing slope, making it necessary to protect it from landslides. At the top of the escarpment, there are buildings of the existing SPSK No. 1 hospital. The sixteen-metre-high slope was secured by a 21-metre-long palisade made of reinforced concrete piles.
“The investment has a very modern dimension. Leaders of Polish medicine in many fields work in this hospital. We will educate students better here. We have also increased the number of students at the Faculty of Medicine” – said the investor rector of the Medical University – prof. Dr. Hab. n. Med. Wojciech Załuska. Investors assessed the progress of the works positively. “A big thank you to Budimex. A leader in investments of this type in our city” – emphasized the Lublin Voivode – Lech Sprawka.
The new hospital was located in the place of the former water reservoir and in the immediate vicinity of the Czechówka River. The buildings are founded in peat and silt, which are non-load-bearing soils, thus causing the need to strengthen the soil and foundation the foundations of the buildings on piles. Due to the basement level of segment A and B below a very high groundwater table, it was necessary to protect the excavation against the inflow of water from the side of the excavation slope, through a tight concrete palisade and from the bottom of the excavation, through a filtration screen made of cement soil, created as a result of high-pressure injection of cement slurry – says Contract Director – Radosław Mazio.
In order to achieve this stage of construction, it was necessary to carry out many demolitions and reorganize the work of the hospital and, above all, there was a need to relocate the active sewage, gas, power or medical gas networks supplying the existing hospital, which could not be temporarily disconnected – they had to be open non-stop. It was necessary to build a new sewage pumping station, including infectious sewage pumping stations, so that it could be switched and the old pumping station, which collided with the newly built facility, could be demolished. Demolitions and deep excavations were carried out in the immediate vicinity of historic buildings and, among others, the existing ward of the infectious diseases hospital.
The construction of the new part of the hospital began in October 2019. To date, the construction level has reached 50% of its paces. The completion of the works is planned for mid-2022. More than 200 Budimex employees and subcontractors are currently involved in the construction.
