Although volatile compounds released from typical hot asphalt used for the production of mineral and asphalt mixtures are not harmful to\u00a0humans, they are characterized by\u00a0a\u00a0specific smell. That is why Budimex and LOTOS Asfalt have produced a\u00a0mixture with the scent of\u2026 Flowers. <\/strong><\/p>\n

Comfort and safety at\u00a0work is an important element which, if ensured, increases the efficiency and commitment of employees. Comfort means something different to\u00a0everyone. For employees who work on\u00a0bituminous works, m.in is important. smell, which is an inseparable element of working with a\u00a0hot mineral-asphalt mixture.<\/p>\n

The 35\/50 road bitumen with reduced odour intensity was developed on\u00a0the basis of a\u00a0technology developed by\u00a0LOTOS Asfalt during the implementation of PS 95\/35 S\u00a0industrial bitumen.<\/p>\n

According to\u00a0Cezary Godziuk, President of the Management Board of LOTOS Asfalt: \u2013 Our company particularly cares about the natural environment and the comfort of employees, and has been successfully implementing the sustainable development policy for many years through the production, implementation and promotion of innovative ecological products for road construction. We\u00a0approached the evaluation of the new product based on\u00a0our experience with asphalt PS 95\/35 S. The additive used in\u00a0asphalt with reduced odour intensity is a\u00a0mixture of natural and synthetic essential oils and has a\u00a0pleasant floral aroma.<\/em><\/p>\n

The compounds contained in\u00a0the additive used have a\u00a0two-pronged effect. Most of the active compounds act as\u00a0an odour neutraliser, reacting with odor-causing substances present in\u00a0asphalt vapour, as\u00a0a\u00a0result of which they reduce their volatility (movement). The remaining compounds cause a\u00a0characteristic odour, different from typical petroleum bitumen. After the use of an appropriate proportion of active agents, the concentration of malodorous compounds in\u00a0the fumes of asphalt used at\u00a0technological temperatures in\u00a0road construction is reduced.<\/p>\n

During the pre-implementation delivery, comparative tests of bitumens and full tests of the product with reduced odour intensity (type tests) were performed. The results confirmed compliance with the PN-EN 12591 standard and no\u00a0significant differences in\u00a0the product characteristics were observed.<\/p>\n

What were the feelings of employees during the production and installation of MMA with this asphalt \u2013 says S\u0142awomir Szpak, Deputy Works Manager from Budimex SA: \u2013 Working with a\u00a0mixture containing asphalt with reduced odour intensity was different, i.e. It was clearly noticeable that there was no\u00a0characteristic smell of traditional asphalt. In\u00a0some places you could smell flowers, which made the work more pleasant.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cIt is a\u00a0promising product that is also in\u00a0line with the green and ecological trend in\u00a0construction. Currently, tests and laboratory analyses of the mineral and asphalt mixture that contained this special bitumen \u2013 <\/em>says \u0141ukasz Bargenda, director of the Budimex laboratory complex.<\/p>\n

\u201cInvestment activities beneficial to\u00a0the environment and sustainable development are at\u00a0the heart of Budimex\u2019s operations. We\u00a0implement and encourage the use of low-emission technologies and those that minimize waste generation in\u00a0the construction process. We\u00a0care about the natural environment and improving the working conditions of our employees, and the project we\u00a0are implementing together with LOTOS is an example of such activity \u2013 <\/em>summed up Ewelina Karp-Kr\u0119glicka, Director of the Purchasing, Quality and Environmental Protection Office at\u00a0Budimex.<\/p>\n

The first tests of the odourless asphalt mixture were promising. Budimex is considering the introduction of such a\u00a0solution on\u00a0a\u00a0larger scale.
