Budimex has completed the construction of the \u0141agiewnicka Route, one of the most important investments of the city of Krakow in\u00a0recent years. As\u00a0part of the contract worth\u00a0about PLN 680 million, the largest Polish general contractor commissioned a\u00a03.5-kilometer route. Construction works began in\u00a0July 2018 and lasted until June 2022.<\/p>\n

The contract with Trasa \u0141agiewnicka SA was signed by\u00a0a\u00a0consortium consisting of Budimex and Ferrovial Construction on\u00a017 March 2017. The scope of work included the design and\u00a0construction of a\u00a0communication route from ul.\u00a0Grota-Roweckiego to\u00a0the intersection of Witosa, Halszki and Beskidzka streets\u00a0. An important part of the investment was the preparation of a\u00a0tram line that will connect the Kurdwan\u00f3w housing estate with Zakopia\u0144ska Street. The investor concluded agreements for financing the project with the European Investment Bank and Bank Gospodarstwa Krajowego.<\/p>\n

Over 2 km, i.e. most of the 3.5 km of the road has been led in\u00a0tunnels, the longest of which is over 700 meters long and is located between the Sanctuary of John Paul II\u00a0and the Sanctuary of Divine Mercy. In\u00a0addition, new road junctions, noise barriers, bridges, footbridges and sidewalks were built. The course of the Wilga River bed and the course of the nearby Krak\u00f3w-Skawina railway line were also changed. Bicycle paths were built along the entire investment, and a\u00a0new tram line from Turowicza Street to\u00a0Zakopia\u0144ska Street. Recreational areas have been created above the tunnels, in\u00a0the vicinity of Zbrojarzy Street, m.in.\u00a0skatepark, sports fields and playgrounds.<\/p>\n

The construction of the \u0141agiewnicka Route required a\u00a0comprehensive reconstruction of a\u00a0highly urbanized area in\u00a0the area of ul.\u00a0Zakopane. At\u00a0this point, the route crosses one of the main arteries leading out to\u00a0Krakow and the railway line No. 94. Constant traffic maintenance was necessary on\u00a0both roads. In\u00a0addition, the Wilga River also flows through this area. \u2013 The works were carried out in\u00a0many stages. In\u00a0the first place, the structures necessary to\u00a0transfer the course of the river to\u00a0the new, changed riverbed were constructed in\u00a0sections. This also required the construction of a\u00a0temporary railway track with a\u00a0river crossing for trains. After the \u201crelocation of the river\u201d, it was possible to\u00a0continue work on\u00a0the sections of road and tram tunnels that had previously been in\u00a0collision, and then to\u00a0reconstruct the railway line on\u00a0their roof in\u00a0the target course<\/em> \u2013 says Cezary \u0141ysenko, Director of Infrastructure Construction at\u00a0Budimex.<\/p>\n

Construction work was interrupted by\u00a0heavy rainfall and flooding of the Wilga River. \u2013 The largest of them took place in\u00a0August 2021. The Wilga burst out of the riverbed and\u00a0flooded part of the construction site of the \u0141agiewnicka Route when the river embankments were not yet completed. After the resumption of work, we\u00a0managed to\u00a0raise the river embankment and\u00a0make additional protections, which minimized the risk of flooding the route \u2013 <\/em>adds Cezary \u0141ysenko.<\/p>\n

As\u00a0part of the construction of the \u0141agiewnicka Route, a\u00a0new tram line with\u00a0a\u00a0length of approx. 1.7 km. On\u00a0the section of approx. 700 m trams will pass in\u00a0the tunnel. The new tram infrastructure will improve the city\u2019s public transport system and\u00a0improve the living conditions of residents of the southern districts of Krakow.<\/p>\n

\u2013 I\u00a0believe that the construction of the \u0141agiewnicka Route is one of the most complex engineering contracts carried out by\u00a0Budimex. The investment required the cooperation of specialists from many industries in\u00a0the field of construction. At\u00a0the peak of the project, approx. 450 people and 160 equipment units. Coordinating such a\u00a0team was a\u00a0big challenge \u2013 <\/em>sums up Cezary \u0141ysenko, Director of Infrastructure Construction at\u00a0Budimex.<\/p>\n

The construction of the \u0141agiewnicka Route paves the way for the construction of the western section of the so-called the third ring road of Krak\u00f3w with the Pychowice and Zwierzyniecka routes. The new route will contribute to\u00a0relieving traffic in\u00a0the area of the very center of Krakow and will improve inter-district road traffic, which will translate into reduced exhaust emissions and\u00a0improved air quality.<\/p>\n
