On\u00a0November 28, 2022, Baltic Hub (formerly DCT Gdansk), the operator of the largest container terminal in\u00a0the Baltic Sea, ceremonially started the construction of the third deepwater T3 terminal. When completed in\u00a0the second quarter of 2025, the new terminal will have a\u00a0quay wall that is 717 meters long and 17.5 meters deep. It will be\u00a0the third deep-sea quay of the Baltic Hub, which can handle the largest container ships in\u00a0the world. The new terminal will also provide 36.5 hectares of additional operating space. In\u00a0total, the investment is worth EUR 450 million. The T3 project, which will be\u00a0opened for commercial operations after the completion of the first phase in\u00a0the first half of 2024, is a\u00a0testament to\u00a0Baltic Hub\u2019s ambition to\u00a0build the largest container hub serving Central and Eastern Europe and the Baltic States and become one of the largest container terminal hubs in\u00a0Europe.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Timeline of investments<\/strong><\/p>\n

The construction of the T3 project will be\u00a0carried out in\u00a0two stages. In\u00a0the first phase, the consortium of Budimex and DEME will build a\u00a036-hectare terminal next to\u00a0Terminal 1. This new terminal area, which will be\u00a0completed by\u00a0the first half of 2024, will be\u00a0fully reclaimed from the sea. This will increase the Baltic Hub\u2019s handling capacity by\u00a01.5 million TEUs (20-foot containers) to\u00a04.5 million TEUs per year. In\u00a0the second phase, the construction of a\u00a0717-metre-long and 17.5-metre-deep quay wall will begin. It is expected to\u00a0start in\u00a0early 2023 and end in\u00a0the second quarter of 2025.<\/p>\n

The T3 project also includes the purchase of seven quay cranes that are capable of handling the largest ships in\u00a0the world, as\u00a0well as\u00a020 semi-automatic rail-mounted gantry cranes (RMGs) for the container yard, which operators will be\u00a0able to\u00a0control remotely from ergonomically designed workspaces. This will allow for a\u00a0safer, efficient, modern and more comfortable working environment 365 days a\u00a0year.<\/p>\n

The cornerstone laying ceremony was attended by\u00a0the Secretary of State in\u00a0the Ministry of Infrastructure, Marek Gr\u00f3barczyk, representatives of the Polish Development Fund and the Baltic Port in\u00a0Gda\u0144sk, and the main contractors Budimex and DEME Dredging International.<\/p>\n

The commencement of construction works at\u00a0the new T3 Baltic Hub terminal completes the stage of work on\u00a0detailed designs and preparation of the construction site.\u00a0 These activities were carried out as\u00a0part of the so-called \u201cearly start\u201d since the signing of the contract by\u00a0the Budimex \u2013 Deme consortium \u2013 in\u00a0July 2022. Now the consortium is starting work on\u00a0the construction of a\u00a0new terminal. The dredging of the fairway to\u00a0the new terminal and the filling of the water area for its basic structure begins. These works will be\u00a0carried out, among others, by\u00a0a\u00a0special dredging vessel using the appropriate material from the bottom to\u00a0construct a\u00a0platform for the terminal. In\u00a0addition, the consortium is starting the construction of sheet piling around the future terminal.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u00a0have completed design and preparatory work. It is time to\u00a0start the main works on\u00a0the construction of the T3 Baltic Hub. In\u00a0the coming months, we\u00a0will expand the land territory of Poland by\u00a036 hectares. We\u00a0have unique experience in\u00a0the field of hydrotechnical works on\u00a0the largest investments in\u00a0the country. We\u00a0will use this knowledge and experience of our engineers along with the equipment in\u00a0the construction of the new terminal. The construction works themselves involve the performance of dredging works with a\u00a0capacity of over 4 million m3, the construction of a\u00a0mooring line with a\u00a0length of over 700 m. The T3 terminal itself will have an area of over 360,000 m2, an operating depth of 17 m and will be\u00a0semi-automatic, which is a\u00a0novelty in\u00a0Poland and a\u00a0trend present in\u00a0the world at\u00a0the moment.\u201d <\/em>\u2013 says Cezary \u0141ysenko \u2013 Director of the Infrastructure Construction Division of Budimex SA.<\/p>\n

New capabilities for T3<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Baltic Hub is the largest container terminal in\u00a0Poland and has experienced exponential growth from having just one deep-water quay and a\u00a0capacity of 500,000 TEUs when it was founded 15 years ago, to\u00a0becoming a\u00a0true \u201cBaltic Hub\u201d with two deep-sea quays that handled over 2.09 million TEUs in\u00a02021. with a\u00a0total annual capacity of up to\u00a03 million TEUs. At\u00a0the moment, the Baltic Hub has 1,300 meters of quay, 14 Ship-to-Shore (STS) cranes and an annual capacity of 2.7 MTEU.<\/p>\n

In\u00a0addition, the Baltic Hub has become a\u00a0transport gateway to\u00a0Central and Eastern Europe, with inland destinations such as\u00a0the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and Germany. This is the result of continuous investments over the years, which have brought the railway\u2019s capacity to\u00a0750,000 TEUs in\u00a02020.<\/p>\n

Baltic Hub CEO Charles Baker promises that Baltic Hub and its partners will implement the project with the highest environmental standards from the planning stage:\u201cThe Baltic Hub is a\u00a0true terminal of the 21st century, and the development of T3 will bring the latest low-carbon technology that any European port would be\u00a0proud of.\u00a0 We\u00a0reiterate that we\u00a0are taking internationally recognized precautions to\u00a0protect the environment, marine life, and habitats in\u00a0the project area. This A-to-Z design will reflect our commitment to\u00a0sustainable investments, for example through the use of low-carbon concrete and the deployment of low-carbon equipment \u2013 such as\u00a0electric shipyard cranes<\/em>\u201c.<\/p>\n

Baker adds: \u201cT3 will further enrich the services offered by\u00a0the Baltic Hub. Moreover, we\u00a0will be\u00a0able to\u00a0attract new services, destinations and shipping alliances. By\u00a0developing additional transhipment capacities and opening up new sea connections, we\u00a0will also boost the Polish economy as\u00a0a\u00a0whole.\u201d <\/em> <\/p>\n

About Baltic Hub<\/strong><\/p>\n

Baltic Hub (BH) started operating in\u00a02007 under the name DCT Gdansk and has a\u00a0handling capacity of up to\u00a03 million TEU per year. The total length of the terminal\u2019s two deep-water quays is 1.3 km, which allows for the simultaneous handling of 4 vessels. The terminal handles more than 700 ships per year, including 100 calls of the largest container ships in\u00a0the world. \u00a0In\u00a02021, the terminal handled over 2.09 million TEUs. On\u00a0April 8, 2021, BH\u00a0reached the milestone of 15 million TEUs, the total capacity handled since the terminal\u2019s inception. BH\u00a0employs over 1,200 people, of which over 50 percent. lives in\u00a0Gda\u0144sk and the surrounding area. The terminal has a\u00a0direct and significant impact on\u00a0the regional and Polish economy, generating more than PLN 12 billion annually for the state budget from VAT, excise duty and customs. \u00a0BH\u00a0is owned by\u00a0PSA International (40%), the Polish Development Fund (30%) and the IFM Global Infrastructure Fund advised by\u00a0IFM Investors (30%).<\/p>\n
