At\u00a0the end of February this year, we\u00a0began preparations for the assembly of steel structures for the new bridge over the Vistula. According to\u00a0the plan, the first segments have already been installed on\u00a0the pillars. This means that the construction of the pedestrian and bicycle crossing over the Vistula is entering another, very spectacular stage \u2013 with the coming weeks we\u00a0will be\u00a0getting closer to\u00a0joining the two banks. Next year, residents and tourists will be\u00a0able to\u00a0use the crossing connecting the city centre with Praga. The bridge will \u201cbring together\u201d the districts on\u00a0both banks of the river and increase the functionality of the street. Okrzei in\u00a0Praga-P\u00f3\u0142noc.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThe pedestrian and bicycle bridge over the Vistula River will be\u00a0over 400 meters long \u2013 it will be\u00a0one of the largest pedestrian and bicycle crossings in\u00a0Poland. We\u00a0are building this bridge very quickly and if this pace is maintained, it will be\u00a0as\u00a0early as\u00a02024. We\u00a0will put it into use\u00a0<\/em>\u2013 says Mayor Rafa\u0142 Trzaskowski.<\/p>\n

In\u00a0December last year, the concreting of the pillars of the last two river supports of the bridge was completed. As\u00a0planned, at\u00a0the end of February, the bridge\u2019s contractor \u2013 Budimex \u2013 began preparations for the assembly of its steel structures. In\u00a0April, the first segments were installed on\u00a0the pillars. This means that the construction of the pedestrian and bicycle crossing over the Vistula River is entering another, very spectacular stage \u2013 in\u00a0the coming weeks, more bridge spans will be\u00a0installed on\u00a0reinforced concrete supports. After the completion of the works, it will become a\u00a0new showcase of Warsaw.<\/p>\n

\u2013 Residents of the capital will gain an even more functional connection of the two banks of the Vistula River and will be\u00a0able to\u00a0admire one of the most beautiful views \u2013 the panorama of the historic part of Warsaw, which has been inscribed on\u00a0the UNESCO World Heritage List \u2013\u00a0<\/em>adds Mayor Trzaskowski.<\/p>\n

A\u00a0WALK BY\u00a0THE RIVER AND WITH A\u00a0VIEW<\/strong><\/p>\n

The bridge will connect the banks of the Vistula River at\u00a0the level of Karowa and Stefana Okrzei Streets. It will be\u00a0452 meters long. Pedestrians will cover the crossing in\u00a06 minutes, cyclists will cross it in\u00a02 minutes.<\/p>\n

On\u00a0the left bank, before the last pillar, the crossing will widen. It will be\u00a0divided into two ramps, which will be\u00a0thrown over the boulevards at\u00a0the level of the Wybrze\u017ce Ko\u015bciuszkowskie pavement.<\/p>\n

There will be\u00a0no\u00a0division into a\u00a0pedestrian and bicycle zone on\u00a0the bridge. The width of the structure bent in\u00a0the shape of a\u00a0lightning bolt will be\u00a0variable and will be\u00a06.9 m at\u00a0its narrowest point, and it will widen to\u00a016.3 m above the river current. At\u00a0the point of bends, the crossing will be\u00a0much wider so that pedestrians and cyclists can step aside and safely enjoy the views from the two leisure areas with wooden seats. Lighting will be\u00a0provided by\u00a0discreet light sources placed in\u00a0the railings.<\/p>\n

The bridge will be\u00a0made of steel covered with corten-colored paint (orange-brown rust imitation). This material can withstand high humidity by\u00a0the river well. The surface of the bridge will be\u00a0lined with a\u00a0layer of MMA (methacrylate) resin in\u00a0light gray.<\/p>\n

The investment will be\u00a0fully financed from municipal funds \u2013 the cost of the construction of the bridge will amount to\u00a0approx. PLN 120 million.<\/p>\n

MODERNIZATION AND REVITALIZATION \u2013 THE CAPITAL OF CONVENIENCE<\/strong><\/p>\n

The bridge will not only \u201cbring closer\u201d the banks of the river, but will also affect the functionality of the street. Okrzei \u2013 is part of the revitalization of Praga-P\u00f3\u0142noc \u2013 in\u00a0the line with ul.\u00a0Z\u0105bkowska. There will be\u00a0more greenery, bicycle infrastructure, new, wider pavements and small architecture. Design work is underway.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis bridge is symbolic because it connects two sides of Warsaw. I\u00a0was born in\u00a0Praga and I\u00a0am\u00a0proud to\u00a0look at\u00a0this side of the city at\u00a0the moment \u2013 Praga is changing so much that it makes my\u00a0heart grow. The pedestrian and bicycle bridge, on\u00a0which we\u00a0are standing now, also opens up to\u00a0the residents of this district. This is the quintessence of the city\u2019s policy<\/em>\u00a0\u2013 said the President of the Council m.st. Warszawy Ewa Malinowska Grupi\u0144ska.\u00a0\u201cLast Sunday, I\u00a0was walking along the boulevards, on\u00a0Tamka. Such a\u00a0number of Warsaw residents who \u201cspilled out\u201d on\u00a0the streets during the first warm weekend shows how much we\u00a0want to\u00a0spend time together in\u00a0the urban space\u00a0<\/em>\u2013Adds.<\/p>\n

SPRING WORK PLAN<\/strong><\/p>\n

Currently, further merging of steel segments is underway. In\u00a0the coming days, steel piles will be\u00a0driven into the bottom of the river for a\u00a0crane, which will be\u00a0used to\u00a0assemble support elements in\u00a0the river current. This machine is a\u00a0Demag CC3800 \u2013 its load capacity is up to\u00a0650 tonnes. With the help of this type of equipment, e.g. wind turbine propellers. The specialized crane is used for a\u00a0reason \u2013 one element of the bridge is 23 meters long and weighs up to\u00a036 tons.<\/p>\n

In\u00a0the meantime, less spectacular works are also underway, such as\u00a0the reconstruction of the rainwater drainage system and teletechnical networks and the construction of a\u00a0reinforced embankment, the so-called \u201cEmbankment\u201d. geogrid \u2013 on\u00a0the Ko\u015bciuszko Coast.<\/p>\n

The crossing, which is part of the concept of the New Center of Warsaw, is to\u00a0be\u00a0ready in\u00a0spring 2024.<\/p>\n
