On\u00a0Sunday, 6 August, the ceremonial opening of the modernised and expanded Polish Theatre in\u00a0Szczecin took place. This building, unique on\u00a0a\u00a0European scale, currently has 5 modern stages, which can accommodate a\u00a0total of nearly 1,000 spectators. As\u00a0part of the project, Budimex not only modernised the over 100-year-old part of the facility, but also built a\u00a0completely new building \u2013 located 2 metres below sea level \u2013 a\u00a0modern reinforced concrete and glass structure integrated into the Oder escarpment. The contract value amounted to\u00a0PLN 170 million net, and the works lasted 3 years. \u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

The construction of the Polish Theatre in\u00a0Szczecin was a\u00a0real engineering challenge. In\u00a0order to\u00a0create a\u00a0multi-storey underground part, it was necessary to\u00a0lower the groundwater table. For this purpose, more than 60 thousand cubic meters of soil were removed and about 150 thousand cubic meters of water were pumped. That\u2019s not all. Over 5000 cubic meters of concrete and over 2000 tons of reinforcing steel were used to\u00a0make the diaphragm wall, which is a\u00a0vertical protection of the excavation lying on\u00a0the slope of the building. As\u00a0a\u00a0result of the work, a\u00a0structure with an area of over 4500 square meters was created, the highest of which is over 22 meters. However, the numbers alone do\u00a0not tell the whole story.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe implementation of this project was a\u00a0big challenge, not only for purely structural reasons. The pandemic, galloping prices of materials and the outflow of workers from Ukraine are just some of the obstacles we\u00a0have had to\u00a0face. In\u00a0the end, we\u00a0completed the construction only five months later than planned. It is also a\u00a0great satisfaction that thanks to\u00a0the new facility, Szczecin will become a\u00a0city teeming with cultural life \u2013 <\/em>says Artur Popko, President of the Management Board of Budimex S.A.,<\/p>\n

The Polish Theatre in\u00a0Szczecin was built almost 100 years ago and is a\u00a0real pearl of modernist architecture. The revitalisation of the historic building while preserving all its characteristic elements was only part of the task faced by\u00a0Budimex. Its second element was the connection of the old part with a\u00a0new \u2013 modern reinforced concrete and glass structure integrated into the Oder escarpment. The new building, 17 m high, consists of 4 underground buildings and an observation deck, which is also the roof of the New Theatre Building. It is in\u00a0the new part that the main stage with 569 seats, the stage of the Shakespeare theater (549 seats) and the experimental stage with almost 200 seats are located.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile implementing this complex structure, we\u00a0made one of the largest soffits of the building\u2019s foundations in\u00a0jet-grouting technology. Thanks to\u00a0this, we\u00a0can boast of the first such high reinforced concrete pressure wall in\u00a0Poland, which secures the stability of the old theatre building, and at\u00a0the same time is a\u00a0structural element of the new building \u2013 <\/em>says Jaros\u0142aw Ma\u015blanka, director of the West Pomeranian region of Budimex S.A.<\/p>\n

The author of the design of the Polish Theatre is Atelier Loegler Architekci sp. z\u00a0o.o. from Krakow. The first performances on\u00a0the new stages will take place in\u00a0August this year.<\/p><\/div>\n <\/div>\n
