Three-dimensional pedestrian crossings have conquered the Internet after the authorities of the Indian city of New Delhi and the tiny Icelandic village of Isafj\u00f6rdur boasted of painting them. In\u00a0both cases, this innovative solution made the drivers take their foot off the accelerator. Other countries followed in\u00a0the footsteps of the precursors, including Poland, where in\u00a0recent weeks as\u00a0many as\u00a0three such \u201czebras\u201d have been created thanks to\u00a0the Hello ICE campaign.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Miech\u00f3w, Lesznowola and Bartoszyce \u2013 these towns have joined the group of cities that are testing a\u00a0new, revolutionary solution to\u00a0increase pedestrian safety. Three-dimensional pedestrian crossings look like an obstacle thanks to\u00a0an optical illusion, which forces drivers to\u00a0take their foot off the accelerator. According to\u00a0research conducted in\u00a0New Delhi, the capital of India, which was the first to\u00a0test this method of fighting for pedestrian safety, the average speed of vehicles before the 3D crossing was as\u00a0much as\u00a040% lower than in\u00a0the same location before. Such good results have aroused the interest of the whole world and in\u00a0the last three years three-dimensional \u201czebras\u201d have been created, among others, in\u00a0Iceland, London, China and France. The idea raised initial concerns among drivers, some of them argued that such horizontal markings are dangerous because it can scare drivers into emergency braking. \u201cThere is no\u00a0such risk. The optical illusion is subtle enough to\u00a0attract the attention of drivers, but at\u00a0the same time visible enough to\u00a0take their foot off the accelerator. I\u00a0believe that we\u00a0should stop blaming the authorities for everything, and start helping them solve the biggest problems of humanity, using our talents \u2013 <\/em>emphasizes Saumya Pandya Thakkar<\/strong>, an Indian 3D artist who, together with her mother, designs three-dimensional pedestrian crossings in\u00a0India. In\u00a0her country, nearly 16 thousand pedestrians were killed in\u00a02016. This was one of the key arguments to\u00a0look for non-standard solutions.<\/p>\n

More and more accidents on\u00a0the lanes<\/strong><\/p>\n

Although the number of road accident victims in\u00a0Poland has been decreasing in\u00a0recent years, the safety of pedestrians at\u00a0crossings, where they should be\u00a0maximally protected, is not improving. In\u00a02009, people who died on\u00a0the lanes accounted for 5.2% of all deaths in\u00a0accidents, and in\u00a02018 \u2013 as\u00a0much as\u00a010%. Annually, it is over 200 people. The most vulnerable groups are seniors and children and young people on\u00a0their way to\u00a0and from school. \u2013 For pedestrians up to\u00a0<\/em> The vast majority of incidents involving them occur in\u00a0places that should be\u00a0safe by\u00a0definition (e.g. pedestrian crossings, pavements). Every year, the vast majority of vehicle drivers are the perpetrators of this type of road accidents \u2013 hence the services responsible for ensuring compliance with the law play an important role in\u00a0ensuring the safety of unprotected road users. The police, in\u00a0addition to\u00a0\u201cstandard\u201d activities, undertakes many actions directed against these road users, as\u00a0well as\u00a0preventive actions aimed at\u00a0various age groups \u2013 <\/em>emphasizes Commissioner Robert Opas<\/strong> from the Road Traffic Bureau of the National Police Headquarters.<\/p>\n

Police officers are constantly looking for new ways to\u00a0increase safety at\u00a0pedestrian crossings, but \u2013 as\u00a0the Indian artist emphasized \u2013 society should not only demand, but also help. That is why the Hello ICE program was created in\u00a0Poland, under which a\u00a0number of activities are carried out to\u00a0improve the safety of children.<\/p>\n

\u201cSafety on\u00a0Polish roads is improving, but we\u00a0still have a\u00a0long way to\u00a0go\u00a0to\u00a0catch up with the Scandinavian countries, for example. Painting three-dimensional pedestrian crossings is one of the elements of our Hello ICE program. It is a\u00a0creative and unconventional approach to\u00a0the problem of pedestrian safety. I\u00a0am\u00a0glad that the local authorities from Bartoszyce, Miech\u00f3w and Lesznowola were persuaded to\u00a0this solution and helped us overcome the bureaucracy, which unfortunately makes it very difficult to\u00a0introduce 3D crossings on\u00a0a\u00a0large scale \u2013 <\/em>emphasizes Katarzyna W\u00f3jcik<\/strong>, an expert on\u00a0communication in\u00a0Budimex, the company organising the Hello ICE programme.<\/p>\n

Systemic solutions needed<\/strong><\/p>\n

Currently, the number of three-dimensional \u201czebras\u201d in\u00a0Poland is small, and they are located primarily on\u00a0internal roads near schools and in\u00a0park complexes. This is due to\u00a0the legal status \u2013 such horizontal markings are not normative in\u00a0the eyes of the legislator\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0Local government officials who want to\u00a0use this solution on\u00a0public roads often have their hands tied, although 3D belts have already proven themselves in\u00a0many countries, and their users praise them very much. \u2013 In\u00a0the place where the 3D lanes were created, there have been many dangerous situations before. When I\u00a0walked my\u00a0granddaughter to\u00a0school, I\u00a0had to\u00a0watch out for cars leaving from the direction of the housing estate. Now drivers are slowing down and are more careful. And children also look around more carefully before they enter the road. It\u2019s just safer. I\u00a0hope that such three-dimensional pedestrian crossings will be\u00a0built all over Poland in\u00a0dangerous places. You have to\u00a0use good models \u2013\u00a0<\/em>emphasizes Barbara, a\u00a0resident of Bartoszyce. We\u00a0hear similar voices when talking to\u00a0drivers in\u00a0Miech\u00f3w, Bartoszyce or\u00a0Lesznowola.<\/p>\n

The worst time for Polish pedestrians is approaching. In\u00a0autumn and winter, when darkness falls early, most of them die. Worse visibility means that drivers are often unable to\u00a0see them in\u00a0time. Therefore, it is worth remembering not only about reflectors, but also about road infrastructure. It is also necessary to\u00a0develop systemic solutions that will enable local governments to\u00a0act efficiently in\u00a0the field of increasing pedestrian safety. After all, not as\u00a0many of them die on\u00a0the roads of any EU\u00a0country as\u00a0in\u00a0Poland.<\/p><\/div>\n <\/div>\n
