Research work under the project \u201cOptimisation of the asphalt road surface structure through the use of modified bitumen\u201d has been completed. The results obtained proved that the developed concepts of pavement construction with the use of highly modified HiMA bitumens allow for the construction of more durable and cheaper roads. Thanks to\u00a0the inclusion of this technology in\u00a0the \u201cCatalogue of Typical Flexible and Semi-Rigid Pavement Structures\u201d, it will be\u00a0more accessible to\u00a0road designers and contractors. This is a\u00a0new chapter in\u00a0the development of road construction in\u00a0Poland.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In\u00a0October 2019, Gda\u0144sk University of Technology, together with the Warsaw University of Technology, the Road and Bridge Research Institute in\u00a0Warsaw, Budimex, Grupa LOTOS and ORLEN Asfalt, signed a\u00a0contract for the implementation of a\u00a0research project entitled \u201cOptimisation of the asphalt road surface structure through the use of modified bitumen\u201d.<\/p>\n

The extensive research work carried out for several months was successful. A\u00a0consortium of manufacturers and scientists has confirmed the positive impact of highly polymer-modified bitumen, i.e. the so-called polymer bitumen. HiMA (Highly Modified Asphalt) bitumens \u00a0on\u00a0the functional properties and fatigue life of road surfaces. During the project, a\u00a0proposal of new requirements for mineral and asphalt mixtures used in\u00a0the substructure was developed, the costs of construction, maintenance and operation of roads were estimated, and the environmental impact indicators of the asphalt surface in\u00a0which HiMA bitumens were used were determined. Thus, it was proven that the proposed solutions significantly extend the life cycle of the surface and reduce the costs of road construction and maintenance.<\/p>\n

\u201d <\/strong>The scope of the work carried out included laboratory tests using the latest achievements and advanced testing\u00a0 procedures for mineral and asphalt mixtures,\u201d says Professor Piotr Jasku\u0142a from the Gda\u0144sk University of Technology, <\/em>which is the leader of the scientific consortium implementing the project<\/em>. \u2013 Based on\u00a0the results of laboratory tests, the analyses carried out confirmed a\u00a0significant extension of the durability of the pavement, improvement of resistance to\u00a0climatic and load factors of the designed pavement structure, where highly modified HiMA bitumen will be\u00a0used in\u00a0the asphalt foundation. The surfaces will be\u00a0able to\u00a0absorb significantly more road traffic than provided for typical surfaces, which will allow them to\u00a0be\u00a0used longer than typically designed surfaces. The extension of the durability of asphalt surfaces can reach up to\u00a050 years. The new asphalt pavements with HiMA asphalt can be\u00a0used in\u00a0the pavement design of major transit roads in\u00a0non-urban and urban areas. The advantage of the new solutions is that repairs and maintenance treatments are limited only to\u00a0the upper layers of the surface, without the need to\u00a0interfere with the asphalt foundation. This will contribute to\u00a0a\u00a0significant reduction in\u00a0financial outlays on\u00a0road maintenance, as\u00a0well as\u00a0reducing traffic difficulties and improving the safety of road users,\u201d adds the professor.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u2013 <\/strong>By\u00a0implementing new generation bitumen products, LOTOS Asfalt has been actively\u00a0 contributing to\u00a0the development of road construction and improving the durability and quality of roads for years. Naturally, representatives of our company could not be\u00a0missing from such an important project. This is a\u00a0model example of cooperation between the academic community and the business world, which allowed for the development of specific recommendations. The research showed that thanks to\u00a0the wide use of highly modified bitumen, road infrastructure<\/em> in\u00a0Poland and around the world, it will gain new construction and material solutions beneficial to\u00a0investors, contractors and road users\u00a0 alike,\u201d<\/em> adds Cezary Godziuk, President of the Management Board of LOTOS Asfalt.<\/p>\n

Now the project will enter the next stage. \u2013 <\/strong>In\u00a0the coming months, Budimex and its partners plan to\u00a0carry out a\u00a0test section using the solutions proposed in\u00a0the work. We\u00a0are counting on\u00a0partnership cooperation with the Investor. The use of new technology can bring savings in\u00a0the maintenance of \u00a0new roads <\/em>\u2013 says Artur Popko, Vice-President of Budimex SA.<\/p>\n

The target result of the research work are data sheets containing ready-made solutions for the construction of flexible pavements with the use of highly modified HiMA bitumen. They will be\u00a0included in\u00a0the \u201cCatalogue of Typical Flexible and Semi-Rigid Pavement Structures\u201d of 2014, which is commonly used by\u00a0road designers when selecting appropriate technological solutions. For this purpose, data sheets together with test reports will be\u00a0submitted to\u00a0the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways (GDDKiA).<\/p>\n

\u2013 <\/strong>ORLEN Asfalt actively promotes highly modified bitumens as\u00a0a\u00a0solution to\u00a0improve the durability and quality of asphalt surfaces in\u00a0Poland. Thanks to\u00a0the cooperation between business and science, we\u00a0are taking another step on\u00a0the way to\u00a0the development of innovative road construction technologies. We\u00a0hope that further popularisation of solutions using HIMA bitumens will also have a\u00a0positive impact on\u00a0the further development of our business,\u201d <\/em>said Marek Pietrzak, President of ORLEN Asfalt.<\/p>\n

The catalogue contains solutions accepted by\u00a0GDDKiA, but the structures described so far have been based on\u00a0the use of only road bitumens (unmodified) and bitumens modified with the classic amount of polymer. The addition of new data sheets should translate into the affordability and widespread use of HiMA highly modified bitumens among both designers and contractors.<\/p><\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/section>\n
