The first phase of the expansion of the \u201c\u017belazny Most\u201d tailings storage facility is coming to\u00a0an end. Budimex used the mild winter to\u00a0carry out works ahead of the assumptions included in\u00a0the schedule for Phase 2 and 3. The planned completion date of the entire works is June 2022.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The investment carried out by\u00a0Budimex includes activities related to\u00a0preparatory activities and the construction of dams surrounding the Southern Quarter \u2013 the eastern dam located in\u00a0the Rudna Municipality and the western dam in\u00a0the Polkowice Commune. The works commissioned by\u00a0KGHM Polska Mied\u017a S.A. have been underway since May 2018. \u201cThe \u017belazny Most Tailings Storage Facility is the largest waste reservoir of this type in\u00a0Europe. After the completion of the works, a\u00a0quarter will be\u00a0built that will be\u00a0able to\u00a0accommodate about 170 million cubic meters of waste from copper ore flotation,\u201d says Artur Popko, Vice President of Budimex SA. Due to\u00a0the strategic nature of the task, despite certain restrictions related to\u00a0the coronavirus epidemic, the work is continued in\u00a0accordance with special occupational health and safety rules,\u201d adds Artur Popko.<\/p>\n

The full implementation of the works is planned for mid-2022. The opening of the Southern Quarter will enable the deposit of flotation waste over its entire area to\u00a0be\u00a0commenced. The contract value is PLN 578 million.<\/p>\n

Smooth operation
Earthworks related to\u00a0the construction of the Phase I\u00a0reservoir have already been completed in\u00a099 percent, and sliding concreting of the K2 and K3 chambers has also been completed. Currently, finishing works and installation of mattress drainage are underway on\u00a0site, and the construction of sealing cohesive layers is also underway. Drainage installations of the facility are planned for the coming months. \u201cThe mild winter treated us kindly, allowing us to\u00a0carry out many works earlier than we\u00a0assumed in\u00a0the schedule. Currently, rainy days, which have been abundant in\u00a0Poland recently, remain a\u00a0challenge \u2013 says Artur Popko, Vice-President of Budimex SA.<\/p>\n

About 50 subcontractors are currently working on\u00a0site, and about 170 equipment units are also involved in\u00a0the activities \u2013 mainly Budimex\u2019s own<\/p>\n

Strategic Object
The \u017belazny Most Tailings Storage Facility is a\u00a0place for depositing copper ore flotation tailings from all mines of KGHM Polska Mied\u017a S.A. Modern construction technologies implemented by\u00a0Budimex will ensure the effective use of the facility and the development of KGHM in\u00a0the copper belt. The investor chose the safest variant of the construction and sealing of the dams, both in\u00a0terms of hydrotechnical and environmental aspects.<\/p>\n

The target volume of the Southern Quarter is to\u00a0be\u00a0about 170 million m\u00b3, the length of the external dams is about 6400 m, and the height is to\u00a0be\u00a0a\u00a0maximum of 60 m. The width of the beaches is planned to\u00a0be\u00a0at\u00a0least 200 m. The facility is environmentally neutral and fully protects the natural surroundings from water collected in\u00a0the tank.<\/p>\n

Budimex, as\u00a0a\u00a0leader in\u00a0the construction industry, has many hydrotechnical projects to\u00a0its credit. It is m.in.\u00a0contractor of the Racib\u00f3rz Dolny flood control reservoir being completed, currently it is also carrying out design work on\u00a0the construction of the \u201cVistula\u201d collector in\u00a0Warsaw.<\/p>\n

The \u201c\u017belazny Most\u201d tailings storage facility investment is being carried out by\u00a0Budimex SA Infrastructure Construction Branch South.<\/p><\/div>\n <\/div>\n
