The next stage of Warsaw’s energy transformation has been completed. A new 220 MWt gas-oil boiler room at the Kawęczyn Heating Plant has been commissioned and put into operation. The investment was carried out by Budimex, providing the capital with a modern and low-emission heat source.
The new gas-oil boiler room at the Kawęczyn Heating Plant, owned by ORLEN Termika SA, is one of the most important modernisation projects in the capital’s energy sector in recent years. The facility is based on two water-tube boilers with a total nominal capacity of approx. 220 MWt, equipped with SCR catalytic flue gas denitrification installations, a flue gas discharge system with individual chimney ducts and auxiliary infrastructure meeting the requirements of BAT conclusions. The facility can run on both natural gas and light oil as a reserve fuel. It has been designed and manufactured in a formula that ensures high energy efficiency, for a single unit it reaches ≥95% at nominal power. It also provides a flexible range of operation, allowing for safe and stable balancing of the capital’s heating system.
The project required the reconstruction of the plant’s heat dissipation system and the expansion of the power system to ensure a stable and reliable power supply to the new unit. The facility and the auxiliary infrastructure have been integrated into the existing land development, taking into account the reconstruction of the network and the road system, as well as the existing functional system of the heating plant. The new unit is a milestone towards the decarbonisation of the capital’s heating sector – it accounts for about 5% of the thermal capacity in the Warsaw District Heating System.
” The commissioning of the new heating unit at the Kawęczyn Heating Plant is the result of several years of cooperation between all entities involved in the modernization of the capital’s heating system. The project was technologically complex and included the construction of a new generating unit, complex integration of the plant and the commissioning of advanced environmental technologies. We are all the more satisfied that Budimex, as the leading Polish general contractor, can realistically support Warsaw’s energy transition ,” says Maciej Olek, Member of the Management Board, Chief Operating Officer of Railway, Energy and Industrial Construction at Budimex SA.
Budimex was responsible for the comprehensive implementation of the investment, including design, technology supply, construction, assembly, mechanical and electrical works, control integration, tests, commissioning and preparation for operation. A team of Budimex specialists in the field of energy was responsible for the course of the work, coordinating all phases of the investment – from design to final confirmation of technical parameters and readiness for operation of the unit.
