At the request of Polish State Railways S.A., the largest Polish general contractor is starting a comprehensive reconstruction and modernization of the railway station in Grudziądz. The investment is carried out in the “design and build” formula and includes the renovation of the historic building with respect for its modernist character, improving accessibility, implementing modern technological solutions and expanding functions related to the safety and comfort of travelers.
Budimex is implementing one of the most important railway infrastructure modernisation projects in the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Voivodeship. The reconstruction of the railway station in Grudziądz will allow the building to be fully functional, while preserving its historical character. The facility, entered into the register of monuments in 2021 as an example of post-war modernism, will undergo a comprehensive modernization corresponding to modern standards of passenger service, energy efficiency and safety.
The scope of work includes, m.in, replacement of the façade with the structure and joinery, roof repair and installation of a photovoltaic installation, insulation of the building, as well as comprehensive reconstruction of the interiors. During the construction, the most valuable historical elements will be preserved and reconstructed, including stone cladding, metalwork and characteristic architectural details. The building will be equipped with an elevator, ramps and new toilets adapted to the needs of people with disabilities, significantly improving the accessibility of the facility.
“The modernization of the station in Grudziądz is a project that requires a combination of engineering experience with a high sensitivity to the value of historical architecture. Our goal is to create a space that will serve residents and travelers well for decades to come, while maintaining the identity of one of the city’s most iconic buildings. Such investments show that modern infrastructure can coexist harmoniously with architectural heritage,” says Janusz Zwolenkiewicz, Contract Manager at Budimex SA.
After the completion of the investment, passengers will gain a modern main hall with a waiting room, ticket offices, service and catering facilities and a dynamic passenger information system. The station will be equipped with public Wi-Fi, ticket machines, infokiosks and charging stations for mobile devices. The surroundings of the facility will also be rebuilt, where new pedestrian routes, parking lots, green areas and infrastructure prepared for the development of the urban interchange will be created. An important element of the station will also be the underground floor, which will be adapted to serve as a shelter for the population of category U-1.
During the investment, a temporary station will operate, which will provide uninterrupted passenger service throughout the entire project implementation. The modular, two-storey facility is located on the west side of the current station and is equipped, among m.in, with a waiting room, a ticket office and the premises of the Railway Security Guard: “The temporary station will allow to maintain the current service of passengers and is a necessary stage preparing the start of basic construction works in the comprehensive modernization of the railway station in Grudziądz,” adds Janusz Zwolenkiewicz, Contract Manager at Budimex SA.
The completion of all works and the opening of the modernized station to travelers is planned for mid-2028. The project, worth PLN 76.3 million gross, is being implemented at the request of Polish State Railways S.A. and will be one of the largest projects related to the modernization of historic railway stations in Poland.
The modernization of the station in Grudziądz is another investment of Budimex related to the revitalization and construction of railway facilities in Poland. In recent years, the company has carried out a comprehensive modernization of the historic railway station in Białystok, the reconstruction of one of the largest railway stations in the country – Warszawa Zachodnia – and is carrying out works on the reconstruction of the historic railway station in Nowe Skalmierzyce. These projects combine the protection of architectural heritage with the implementation of modern solutions that improve the comfort, safety and accessibility of railway infrastructure.
