Budimex won four prestigious awards during the Final Gala of the XXXV edition of the “Construction of the Year” competition, organised by the Polish Association of Construction Engineers and Technicians. Honorable mentions were awarded for the following projects: Waterfront II, Port of Gdynia, pedestrian and bicycle bridge over the Vistula River and a sports hall in Ziębice.
The “Construction of the Year” competition, organized continuously for 35 years by the Polish Association of Construction Engineers and Technicians, is one of the most prestigious laurels in the Polish construction sector. The event, under the patronage of ministries, institutions and key industry organizations, aims to identify and promote buildings, structures and investment processes for which outstanding implementation results have been achieved.
The jubilee – the XXXV edition of the “Construction of the Year” competition – was a unique opportunity not only to compete for prestigious awards, but was also a form of maintaining and cultivating the rich and centuries-old tradition of Polish technical and engineering thought.
During the Final Gala, Budimex received two first-degree awards, the so-called Construction Oscars – for works on the implementation of “Improving rail access to the Port of Gdynia” and the construction of the modern Waterfront II office and residential complex in Gdynia.
The project “Improving railway access to the Port of Gdynia” with a net value of PLN 1.9 billion included a comprehensive reconstruction of the Port of Gdynia railway station, including the pre-port areas and accompanying infrastructure. The modernization works, in which nearly 600 people and 200 equipment units were involved every day, included the modernization of 115 km of tracks, the installation of 359 turnouts and the electrification of access roads to the port. In addition, 13 km of roads, a railway bridge and 25 rail-road crossings were reconstructed. Two new railway viaducts, the building of the Local Control Centre, two railway interlocking stations and a new PKP Cargo office building were also built. The strategic project has significantly improved rail transport in one of the most key transport hubs for Polish, allowing for an increase in the capacity and effectiveness of logistics services.
As part of the second phase of the Waterfront project, two residential buildings with 126 units with a usable area of 8,872 m² and two office buildings with a usable area of 9,872 m² were built in Gdynia. On the ground floor level there are 27 commercial premises. The underground infrastructure in the area of Waszyngtona, Jana Pawła II and Hryniewickiego streets was also rebuilt, as well as road surfaces and sidewalks along these streets. Numerous plantings of trees, shrubs, perennials and lawns were made, as well as elements of small architecture made of corten sheets and bangkirai wood. An underground car park for 260 vehicles was built under the buildings.
The second degree award was awarded to two other facilities, for the construction of which Budimex was also responsible: a pedestrian and bicycle bridge over the Vistula River and an entertainment and sports hall in Ziębice.
The pedestrian and bicycle bridge over the Vistula River, connecting Warsaw’s Śródmieście with Praga-Północ, is the longest pedestrian and cyclist crossing in Poland and one of the largest investments of this type in Europe. The facility has a variable width of 6.9 to 16.3 meters and has been equipped with railings with LED lighting and a monitoring system. The structure is fully adapted to the needs of people with reduced mobility, and two relaxation zones have been set aside along its length.
Thesports and entertainment hall in Ziębice has an area of over 3.7 thousand m², and its height is 11.35 meters. Almost 700 people can admire the spectacle from its stands, and well-thought-out solutions, such as telescopic folding stands, allow the space to be adapted to the needs of each event.
This is another time that Budimex has been awarded in a competition organised by the Polish Association of Construction Engineers and Technicians. In previous years, the company has won first, second and third degree awards for such projects as: modernisation of the LOT C railway junction section Vistula Bridge – Czechowice-Dziedzice – Zabrzeg, railway bridge over Regalica and the Integrated Communication Centre in Lublin.
