On 18 May 2015, at the construction site of a new power unit at the Turów Power Plant, the ground-breaking ceremony took place.

The investment worth PLN 3 billion 250 million net is being carried out by a consortium of companies: Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems Europe GmbH (consortium leader with 55.38% of shares), Budimex SA (consortium partner with 22.31% of shares) and Tecnicas Reunidas SA (consortium partner with 22.31% of shares).

The order to commence work was issued by PGE Górnictwo i Energetyka Konwencjonalna, a company belonging to the PGE Capital Group, on December 1, 2014. After obtaining this decision, Budimex commenced design work and preparation of the construction site and facilities. Currently, the cooling tower bowls are being demolished on the investment site. These works will take several more months. Further works include the relocation of railway tracks (used to transport the transformers of the existing power plant from the area). It will also be necessary to remove all installations colliding with the newly designed facilities and to construct new water, sewage and industrial networks.

After the design stage, disassembly, demolition and interchange works, Budimex will commence construction works, i.e.: excavations and foundations.

“This is a very important contract for us and the largest one currently being carried out by Budimex in the energy sector. We have the right potential to efficiently implement this investment,” said Andrzej Goławski, Director of Power and Industrial Construction at Budimex. We plan further development in the energy segment and, therefore, increasing the employment of specialists in this industry,” he added.

The total value of the energy contracts signed by Budimex is PLN 814.5 million net. Currently, the company is implementing contracts for the PGE Group, as well as for EDF and PGNiG.

The contract for the construction of a new power unit with a net electrical capacity of 450 MWe (megawatt of electrical capacity), including the installation of a flow-through boiler for supercritical steam parameters, a condensing turbine with a generator and a wet flue gas desulphurization system, was signed on July 10, 2014. The consortium has 56 months from the date of issuing the order to start work to implement the investment.

The scope of work of Budimex and Tecnicas Reunidas includes:

  • designing
  • construction and assembly works along with the supply of steel structures,
  • delivery and installation of the electrical part and installation of control and measurement equipment and automation,
  • construction of a cooling system with the use of a cooling tower with a purified flue gas discharge system,
  • installation of the ash removal and slag removal system,
  • other supplies and works in the field of auxiliary farms.

Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems Europe will supply a high-efficiency steam boiler,
complete equipment for the flue gas treatment system, pipelines, turbine with generator and I&C systems. In addition, MHPSE will also carry out the commissioning of the unit.

The new unit at the power plant is one of the projects of the PGE Capital Group’s investment program with a total value of approx. PLN 50 billion, which, through a significant reduction in emissions of carbon dioxide, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxides and dust, will significantly reduce the company’s impact on the environment. In the years 2014-2020, the Group plans to spend approx. PLN 30 billion.
