Budimex has completed the construction of another section of the S5 expressway for the General Directorate for Roads and Motorways, Olsztyn Branch.

The new section of the S5 connects the Ostróda bypass in the line of national road No. 16 with the existing route of national road No. 16 in the area of Wirwajdy, along with the adaptation of the existing section of DK16 from the Ostróda south junction to the Ostróda west junction. The construction of the S5 in the 2+2 lanes standard began in July 2020. The contract deadline was 28.05.2023. The value of the contract with the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways, Olsztyn Branch, is PLN 165.6 million net.

Nearly 1,000,000 m3 of land was used during the implementation of the investment. In addition, due to the deposition of low-bearing soils to a depth of 13.5 m in the area of 12,500 m2, the area was reinforced with concrete and gravel columns with the maximum length of the columns. Ultimately, 75,000 tons of bituminous mass were built into the road.

4 new engineering structures were built along the expressway (2 lower passages for large animals, 2 road viaducts over existing roads) and 2 engineering structures over the expressway. Budimex has also completed 6 culverts for ecological purposes for small animals. During the construction of engineering structures, 7,000 m3 of concrete and 600 tons of steel were used.

The construction of the S5 on the Ornowo – Wirwajdy section is another road investment of Budimex in Warmia and Mazury. Earlier, the Polish contractor completed the Smolajny and Olsztyn bypass and the southern bypass of Ostróda Subsection B, i.e. a nearly 10-kilometre section of the S7 expressway (9.7 km) and a slightly shorter national road DK16 (9 km). The scope of works of the Ostróda investment also included the construction of the largest extradosed bridge in Europe. The record-breaking four-span investment with a total length of 677 meters was made using the overhang technology.

Currently, in this province, Budimex is also carrying out the extension of DW No. 527 on the section of section No. Łukta – Olsztyn. The completion date of the works is planned for June 2023.
