Budimex has signed an agreement with PKP PLK for the implementation of an important stage of the “Podłęże-Piekiełko” project in Małopolska. The contract includes, m.in, the construction of a new railway line No. 622 on the F+J Podłęże R401-Gdów section and the construction of slip road No. 627 on the Podłęże R301-Podłęże Balachówka section. The value of the contract is PLN 2,578,049,232 net.

PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe selected Budimex’s offer as the most advantageous in the tender for the design and comprehensive execution of construction works on railway line No. 622 on the Podłęże R401-Gdów section and on slip road No. 627 on the Podłęże R301-Podłęże Balachówka (F+J) section, implemented as part of the “Podłęże-Piekiełko” project (Stage II). The estimated lead time will be 38 months from the date of conclusion of the agreement. The investment will be carried out in a consortium with Ferrovial Construction and Budimex Kolejnictwo.

“Podłęże-Piekiełko” is currently the largest railway investment in the south of the country, of significant importance for the system of connections in the region. The project is to significantly reduce travel time in Małopolska (ultimately, m.in. on the Kraków-Nowy Sącz sections by approx.60 minutes and Kraków-Zakopane by approx. 90 minutes), as well as increase the possibilities of freight transport.

This investment is one of the most important and complex railway projects of recent years. Its scale and strategic importance for improving connections in the region make it a priority undertaking for the whole country. Our company’s participation in this project is a confirmation of our experience and competence in conducting investments that require the highest level of know-how and precise management. Thanks to this, we can effectively contribute to the modernization of the railway infrastructure, which will significantly increase the comfort and safety of passenger travel and the development of freight transport in Poland ,” says Artur Popko, President of Budimex SA.

As part of the task, a complete infrastructure system will be created, which will increase the capacity and flexibility of traffic management, increase the level of safety and strengthen the resistance of the line to terrain restrictions and collisions with road infrastructure. The scope of works includes, m.in, design (within the scope of the SRK industry) and comprehensive execution of construction works for the new, double-track railway line No. 622 on the section Podłęże R401-Gdów and the construction of a single-track railway slip road No. 627 on the section Podłęże R301-Podłęże Balachówka. At the same time, the works necessary to connect the new infrastructure to the existing network will be carried out, including on lines No. 91 and No. 95.

The project also assumes the construction of a tunnel with a length of approx. 900 m. The whole is complemented by solutions enabling efficient traffic management and collision-free routes: 51 new turnouts and 8 platforms, as well as an extensive package of engineering structures:

  • 17 railway bridges,
  • 6 road bridges,
  • 11 railway viaducts,
  • and 5 road viaducts, which tidy up the intersection layout and reduce the number of collision points.

The investment is complemented by 2 passages under the tracks, 24 railway culverts and 18 walls and retaining structures stabilizing the course of the route in demanding terrain.

The project will be implemented in a difficult and geologically complex area, requiring advanced technical solutions. It will result in a modern layout of the line – increasing the capacity and reliability of traffic, increasing safety at the rail-road junction and creating a reserve for the development of connections in the coming years. We bring to this project experience in conducting railway investments with a high degree of complexity and proven standards of implementation – adds Artur Popko.

As part of the “Podłęże-Piekiełko” programme, Budimex carried out the first stage of the investment, including the modernisation of the section of line No. 104 Chabówka-Rabka Zaryte with the accompanying infrastructure. The Company has completed works on the A1 section of line No. 104 Chabówka-Rabka Zaryte – the first section to be modernized as part of the “Podłęże-Piekiełko” project.

At the same time, Budimex is building on the Limanowa – Klęczany siding section, which is one of the largest railway projects in the region. This section, carried out in a consortium with Gülermak, is particularly difficult due to the construction of tunnels (2 tunnels with a total length of 7.5 kilometers) and a large number of bridge structures and viaducts (22 structures).

Budimex has many years of experience in the implementation of complex infrastructure projects, in which high safety standards, precise coordination of work and predictability of implementation are crucial. In recent years, the company has completed a number of strategic railway projects, including line and station upgrades, engineering facilities and traffic control works. Last year, the company commissioned the Warszawa Zachodnia station after modernization. Budimex’s previous investments include m.in.completion of major works at the Port of Gdynia railway junction and modernisation of the Czechowice-Dziedzice junction. The company also carried out works on the modernization of the railway line No. 7 Warsaw-Lublin.

At the same time, Budimex is involved in projects related to the implementation of Rail Baltica. On the Estonian market, the company participates in the construction of the Pärnu-Latvian border section in the “Alliance” formula. In Latvia, on the other hand, ERB Rail is running a project to build 230 km of high-speed rail infrastructure. Rail Baltica will connect the Baltic States to key European corridors, supporting defence and security, logistics and trade, mobility and economic stability in this part of Europe.
