On 26 October 2026, Polish’s largest general contractor signed an agreement with the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways for the extension of the A2 motorway on the section from the Łódź Północ junction to the border of the Łódzkie and Mazowieckie voivodeships. The 27.9 km long investment will include the addition of additional lanes, increasing capacity and improving travel comfort. The contract with a net value of PLN 352.8 million is another strategic project in Budimex’s portfolio, confirming the company’s commitment to the implementation of key projects for the development of infrastructure in Poland.

The ceremonial signing of the contract for the implementation of works on one of the key motorways in Poland took place on Monday, 26 October 2026. The planned expansion will include the widening of both carriageways of the A2 motorway with an additional lane. As a result, drivers will gain three lanes in each direction, increasing the capacity of the route connecting Łódź with Warsaw. The investment is part of a wider modernisation programme for the A2 motorway, the aim of which is to adapt the infrastructure to the growing volume of vehicle traffic. The date of commencement of the works will be set by the Contracting Authority. From this date, the contractor will have 17 months to complete them.

“The expansion of the A2 motorway is one of the key infrastructure investments in central Poland and another strategic project in Budimex’s portfolio. This contract well illustrates the scale of the projects in which Budimex wants to participate in the coming years. Our goal is to maintain a strong position in the area of infrastructure and continue to participate in the largest projects important for the development of the country, while responding to the changing needs of the market. We will talk more about our ambitions and directions of the Group’s development for the next five years in the coming days,” says Artur Popko, President of the Management Board and CEO of Budimex SA, during the signing of the agreement.

The event was attended by Dariusz Klimczak, Minister of Infrastructure, Paweł Woźniak, Acting Director General of National Roads and Motorways, Marcin Amróz, Director of the GDDKiA Branch in Łódź, and Artur Popko, President of the Management Board and CEO of Budimex SA.

“I congratulate Budimex on winning the tender. I am glad that we are getting to work. We have a set of contracts for the widening of the motorway between Łódź and Warsaw. This will be a very important investment due to the fact that the motorway is at the limits of its capacity. (…) Renewable energy sources and energy storage facilities will be used on this section, which will make the motorway on this section energy self-sufficient. Renewable energy sources will power, among m.in, lighting, weather stations and other devices with which our national roads are equipped,” said Dariusz Klimczak, Minister of Infrastructure.

Additional lanes on the A2

According to the report “General Traffic Measurement in 2025”, prepared by the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways, the average daily number of vehicles on the A2 section covered by the planned expansion exceeds 62 thousand. Passenger cars account for 68 percent of all vehicles, while the share of heavy vehicles is 21 percent.[1] These data confirm the high load on the motorway and the need to increase its capacity.

According to the assumptions of the investment, drivers will have two lanes in each direction at their disposal throughout the construction period – both towards Warsaw and Poznań.

Another stone for a wider expansion of the motorway

The entire modernization program of the A2 motorway between Łódź and Warsaw covers about 92 km of the route. Additional lanes are planned to be added on 89 km, while the remaining 3 km, in the area of the Łódź Północ junction, are planned to replace the surface and modernize the lighting with energy-efficient ones. Ultimately, the motorway will gain a third lane on the section from Łódź to Pruszków, and further, in the direction of the Konotopa junction, a fourth lane.

The signed contract is another major road investment in Budimex’s portfolio. For nearly 60 years, the company has been involved in the development of Polish transport infrastructure, being responsible for the construction of almost every fourth kilometre of new motorways and expressways in the country. Currently, it is implementing, among m.in, further sections of the S10 and S8 expressways and numerous road investments of national and regional importance. The expansion of the A2 motorway strengthens Budimex’s position on the domestic infrastructure market and is in line with the Group’s long-term development directions.
