Budimex has achieved one of the most important milestones in the implementation of a strategic road investment in western Slovakia. At the end of April, key finishing works were completed and traffic was restored on the main sections of the D1 motorway in both directions — to Bratislava and towards Trnava.
The D1/D4 Bratislava-Triblavina project includes the extension of a 3.6-kilometre section of motorway and the comprehensive reconstruction of the existing road infrastructure. This is one of the most important infrastructure investments currently being carried out in the Bratislava area, and at the same time the first contract of Budimex on the Slovak market. Its aim is to improve the connection of the D1 and D4 motorways, improve the capacity of one of the busiest routes in the country and relieve the capital of transit traffic.
Due to the need to adjust the height of the D1 motorway to the course of the D4 motorway, one of the biggest technical challenges was to raise the level of the existing route while maintaining passability. This type of solution, implemented on an active road system with very high traffic volume, is an exceptional undertaking in Slovak conditions.
” Over the past year, traffic has been diverted to collective roads, which has made it possible to carry out extensive construction works without completely stopping traffic. During this time, we have fully raised the level of the D1 motorway, replaced all layers of the pavement, widened the motorway to four lanes and modernised over ten bridge structures ,” said Wojciech Włodzimirski, Contract Director at Budimex SA, during a press conference for the Slovak media.
As part of the last stage of works, carried out at the end of April, traffic was successively moved from temporary collective roads back to the main carriageway of the D1 motorway. The operation required precise coordination of road works, marking, installation of traffic safety elements and commissioning of supervision systems.
” At the peak, more than 100 people and 60 machines worked on the construction site. We started the works by milling the asphalt surface at the beginning of the section, and then we laid a new layer of asphalt and made markings. As part of this stage, we installed kilometers of horizontal markings, replaced six gantries and installed a camera system ,” added Wojciech Włodzimirski.
The completion of works on the main sections of the D1 means a significant improvement in the comfort and smoothness of the passage in the Bratislava area. Further slip roads and fragments of the road system will be successively made available to drivers in the coming weeks.
The implementation of the D1/D4 junction is of strategic importance not only for the inhabitants of Bratislava and the region, but also for transit transport in Slovakia. After the completion of the investment, drivers will gain a more efficient connection of the D1 and D4 motorways, greater capacity and a safer communication system around the capital.
This project is one of the most important examples of Budimex expansion outside Poland. For several years, the company has been consistently strengthening its presence in selected European markets, focusing primarily on road, rail and hydrotechnical projects. Budimex has been present in Slovakia since 2021.
Foreign expansion is one of the elements of the diversification of Budimex’s portfolio. According to the Group’s report for 2025, the company is actively increasing the scale of operations in the German, Czech, Slovak, Estonian and Latvian markets, and these markets are expected to be a source of additional orders and strengthen the stability of the order book in the coming years.
