Investments carried out by Budimex were awarded during the final gala of the 30th. edition of the National Competition “Modernization of the Year & Construction of the 21st Century”. Among the awardees were projects representing various areas of construction: from railway, road and hydrotechnical infrastructure, through public utility facilities, to modern spaces of science and culture.
The official gala of the announcement of the results and the award ceremony took place on September 10, 2026. at the Royal Castle in Warsaw. The jubilee edition of the competition was an opportunity to present investments distinguished by the quality of workmanship, functionality, modern technical solutions and a responsible approach to the existing architecture and surroundings.
During the gala, the jury awards in individual competition categories were presented, as well as distinctions awarded by patrons, industry chambers, public institutions and competition partners. The Competition Regulations also provide for special prizes, awarded by, among others, the organizers, the jury, patrons, sponsors and the Competition Jury.
Among the awarded projects of Budimex were:
• Modernization of the Warszawa Zachodnia Station: the main prize and the title of Construction of the 21st century. in the category of Public Utility Facilities and a special award of the Polish Chamber of Civil Engineers;
• T3 Baltic Hub Container Terminal in Gdańsk: the main prize and the title of Construction of the 21st Century. in the category of Industrial and Engineering Facilities, a special award of the Polish Chamber of Civil Engineers;
• Eastern Innovative Centre for Architecture of the Lublin University of Technology: the main prize and the title “Construction of the 21st century. in the category of Education and Science Facilities”;
• Modernization of the Podlaskie Institute of Culture “Spodków” in Białystok: distinction and the title of Modernization of the Year 2025 in the category of Public Utility Facilities;
• Berdychowskie Bridges in Poznań: distinction and special prize of the “Mosty” magazine published. Elamed in the category of Road and Bridge Structures;
• Modernization of the Rzeszów Główny Railway Station: Modernization of the Year and Construction of the 21st Century distinction;
• Section III of the S7 Modlin–Czosnów expressway: distinction Construction of the XXI century. in the category of Road and Bridge Structures;
• Reconstruction of building No. 2 of the Maritime Border Guard Branch in Gdańsk: distinction and title of Modernization of the Year and Construction of the 21st Century. and a special award from the Ministry of National Defence.
During the gala, a special award was also awarded by the Polish Chamber of Construction for the Best Contractor of Budimex SA for reliability, timeliness and credibility in the investment process.
Projects responding to the needs of users and the economy
The awarded investments show the wide range of Budimex competences. The modernization of the Warszawa Zachodnia Station was one of the largest and most complex railway projects carried out in Poland. The works covered nearly five kilometers of stations, 35 kilometers of tracks, 137 turnouts and 40 kilometers of overhead contact line. The works were carried out with maintained railway traffic, covering an average of over 800 trains per day.
– The modernization of the Warszawa Zachodnia Station was one of the most complex railway projects carried out in Poland. The key challenge was to carry out multi-discipline works while maintaining the continuity of traffic of an average of over 800 trains per day. This required precise staging of works, close coordination of track, traction, construction, installation and railway traffic control works, as well as constant cooperation of all participants involved in the implementation of this modernization. The awards received confirm the quality of the adopted solutions and the high competence of the teams that successfully implemented this extremely demanding project. The result is a modern, accessible and integrated transport hub, which significantly increases the comfort of passenger service, improves rail traffic and strengthens the role of Warsaw West in the national transport system. One of the most spectacular final projects was the T3 Baltic Hub Container Terminal. The investment included the creation of a new, 36-hectare water-based terminal area, the construction of a deep-water quay 717 meters long and 17.5 meters deep, and the execution of extensive hydrotechnical works. The terminal increases the annual handling capacity of the Baltic Hub by 1.5 million TEUs, to a total of 4.5 million TEUs. The project was carried out by a consortium of Budimex and DEME DREDGING, with DEME being responsible for dredging and refulcation works.
– The T3 Baltic Hub Terminal is an investment of strategic importance for the Polish economy and the position of the Port of Gdansk on the logistics map of Europe. The implementation of the terminal required a combination of advanced hydrotechnical knowledge, precise management and the experience of teams working in a demanding marine environment. The award is a confirmation of the high quality of workmanship and effective cooperation of all project participants. I would like to thank the investor, Baltic Hub, our syndicated partner, DEME DREDGING and the entire team, whose professionalism allowed us to implement one of the largest port projects in the Baltic Sea region,” says Piotr Sumiła, Contract Director at Budimex SA.
The final projects also included projects combining modern solutions with the protection of heritage and existing architecture. The modernization of the Rzeszów Główny Railway Station was carried out in a building under conservation protection, and its aim was to reconcile the historical identity of the building with modern functional and technical requirements. In turn, the reconstruction of the building of the Maritime Border Guard Branch in Gdańsk included, among other things, solutions improving usable, technical and fire protection parameters while maintaining the existing architectural form.
The modernization of the “Spodek” created a modern seat of the Podlaskie Institute of Culture, while the Eastern Innovative Center of Architecture of the Lublin University of Technology combined didactic, scientific and architectural functions. The WICA building itself is a tool for practical education of future architects, among other things, thanks to the conscious exposure of structural, material and installation solutions.
The Berdychowskie Bridges in Poznań and the S7 Modlin–Czosnów section represent investments improving the accessibility and efficiency of the transport system. The first of the projects created a new pedestrian and bicycle connection between important parts of Poznań, the second is an important element of the route connecting Warsaw with the north of the country.
Competition promoting the quality of Polish construction
The “Modernization of the Year & Construction of the 21st Century” competition promotes projects that stand out, among others, by the level of architectural and urban solutions, functionality, modernity of technology, quality of workmanship, ecological effects and accessibility for people with disabilities. In the case of historical buildings, the preservation of their architecture and the protection of cultural heritage are also assessed.
Jubilee, 30. the edition of the competition is under the patronage of the Minister of Infrastructure, the Ministry of Climate and Environment, the Minister of National Defence and the Ministry of Development and Technology. The event was also supported by numerous public institutions, local governments, technical universities and industry organizations.
The presence of eight Budimex projects in the jubilee finale confirms the diversity of the company’s competences and ability to carry out complex projects in many segments of the construction market. The common denominator of all investments remains the quality of workmanship, safety, responsibility towards the environment and real value created for users.
